Module 7: Keys to Motivation for Online Learning

One very important thing I have learned in this module is how to effectively improve my concentration during study. The learning environment of college and childhood is different, college pays more attention to self-study. Often learning schedules are self-organizing, and it is impossible for professors to pay attention to everyone. This requires us to enhance our own learning motivation and self-supervision to adapt to the new environment. The biggest enemy on the road to self-management is distraction. Therefore, it is important to learn how to mitigate distractions and create a more productive environment. For example, when I study, there are always a lot of things that distract me and reduce my study efficiency. Therefore, I am used to studying in a closed and quiet space, which greatly ensures that I am not disturbed by outside noise. Everyone needs some physical area, no matter how big or small, that is his or her own — even if it’s only a small part of the shared space. You generally feel more secure and in control in your own space. At the same time, I turn off the phone, or play some concentration-enhancing music, which can greatly reduce the distraction of the phone.

Module 6: Searching and Researching: The Foundations of Academic Writing

Before this week of study, I didn’t think search was a thing to learn. Searching the web for me is something I do every day, and it’s not that difficult. But this unit taught me a lot more about searching effectively. A very useful thing I learned in this module is boolean logic. The Boolean type is a data type supported by Python. The Boolean type has only two values, True and False, so no matter what type it is, the result of its true or false value must be one of True and False. False values: 0, None, empty string “”, empty tuple(), empty list[], empty dictionary {}, etc. Empty values are all False. True value: 1. All values such as strings are True, that is, all values except false values are true values. Web searches use Boolean logic to filter results, so understanding Boolean logic is essential. For example, if you did a search on “car dealerships,” the search engine would have hundreds of millions of matching web pages. If you add the word “Chicago”, that number drops significantly. The search engine, using Boolean algebra, retrieves a page that matches “car”, “dealer” and “Chicago”; in other words, the page must have all of the eligible terms. You can also specify “OR” conditions like “car” and “dealer” AND which gives you a car dealer page in Chicago or Milwaukee.

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

A very important thing I learned in this module is learning how to take notes more effectively. The learning environment in college and childhood is different. College classes are often large classes with many people, professors cannot pay attention to everyone, and the learning pace is very fast, which requires us to improve our note-taking methods to Adapt to the new environment. Therefore, it is very important to learn some more efficient note-taking methods. At the same time, I also learned the difference between taking notes by hand and taking notes with a computer. Through this week’s study, I found that handwritten notes turned out to be more effective than taking notes on a computer! Because when people type their notes, they tend to try to take them verbatim and write down as many lectures as possible. And when they took notes by hand, they were forced to choose what was more effective to record. And the extra handling of the material they’re doing benefits them. Proper email format is also a very useful knowledge point I learned this week. When I first came to the US for college, I didn’t even know what to call my professors. I just emailed my question requests, just didn’t have the polite salutation and proper format. This will greatly increase the workload of professors, and may even be ignored by professors directly. So learning the correct email format is also very important.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

This week I learned a lot of little tricks that help me read. Recently, I have been reading a book every day for no more than an hour and a half (90 minutes). In the past, even if I spent an hour and a half reading a book every day, it would take more than a week to read a book. For a book with a similar word count and genre, why is the reading time so different? How do I achieve fast reading? Through this week’s experiments, I found that reading speed can indeed be quickly improved in a short period of time. Ordinary people can also read ten lines at a time, and can read a book in less than half a day. The key is the method. Next, I will share some speed reading methods that I have learned that are easy to operate, fast and effective, and can be used for a long time. I hope that after practice, the reading speed can also be quickly improved. Before you begin to read, you need to check your PBID! Purpose, you will benefit greatly from taking a minute to identify the purpose of your reading. Background, read the abstract, and think about what you know about the topic. It may be easier for you to read the material if you have a high level of knowledge of the subject. Interest, if you shy away from the text for lack of interest, you need to take some action that makes reading bearable. For example, working with study partners Difficulty, the difficulty of reading material can encourage or discourage students from learning the text.

Module 3: time management and productivity

The most useful thing I’ve learned this week is to make a plan, I started to break down the tasks for the week into each day and make a plan for each of my days. Through this week’s experience, I found that this is really a very effective way to overcome procrastination. I’ve found that sometimes you can’t achieve your goals because you set them too high and too far. So we should break down each plan and complete it step by step. (slides 9)
The purpose of setting small goals is to develop mini habits. Because this goal is easy and effortless for you to achieve. Slowly it will become a mini habit of yours. The so-called mini-habit is to drastically reduce a habit into incredibly small steps. A mini-habit is a very small positive behavior, the goal is too small to fail, it is because of this feature that it will not cause any burden on you, and it is super “deceptive”, so it becomes A powerful habit-forming strategy. That is to say, it is only too small to make the brain think that it is really non-threatening. If you’re not sure how small a habit to develop is, choose the smaller one. This will push us to act little by little, increase the inertia of sticking to it, and improve the ability to get used to it.
Here’s my advice to you: set your goals low and stick to one thing and it won’t be difficult.

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating

Hello everyone!

I think the most useful thing I learned in this module is about the importance of online communication. Online communication plays a vital role in bringing people, societies, businesses, and the world closer together. Due to online communication, the boundaries of time and distance become irrelevant and insignificant. I think online communication is becoming more and more important in today’s society.

First, online communication helps bring the world together. Perhaps most importantly, it brings the people of the world together, making it a truly global village. When it comes to sharing information on the Internet using online communication, nothing is more important than time lag.

Second, online communication has helped almost every field of business. Whether in the arts and culture, sports, medicine, agriculture, industry, defense, or even politics, there is reason to believe that online communication facilitates faster decision-making, rapid dissemination of information, and increased productivity at all levels.

As far as modern offices and business establishments are concerned, online communication is similar to the central nervous system, helping to transfer information quickly, which is important for making good decisions.

Also, this week we learned how to use many useful online tools. Google Docs is my most used tool. The biggest highlight of Google docs is that multiple people can write an article at the same time – real-time synchronization. That is to say when two or more people open a document at the same time, there is no conflict with each other, and each person can see where the other person’s mouse is currently and what actions they are doing—deleting text, writing text, Select text, etc. In this case, if multiple people divide their work and write a part separately, then an article will be written quickly. I also recommend you try using Google Docs. It allows everyone to work together to improve the efficiency of your team.

The high happiness about actuarial analyst
This picture is come from Robert half.com

The first job is actuarial analyst, which is worked to measure the risk of developing a new products for a company or a organization. I think this job suits me very well. Because first of al, I am studying in mathematics, and very interesting in math. And depending on the first pages(the introduction of actuarial analysts), an actuarial analyst must has a foundation of mathematics which can allow he to deal with a huge amount of dates. Also, actuarial analyst is my dream job. This is because I don’t like to take risk or something uncertainty, and this job is just allow me to uses dates to make a predict, which I think is very measurable. And I can always get a task to finish, which can improve my motivation and allow me have a clear mind about what I should do. Then, to be an actuarial analyst can improve my ability on java or c++, which I always wanted to improved. Also, the first picture shows that the prospect of this job is good and the salary is high enough for me, and the second picture which pictures a man with a happy smile shows the high happiness and satisfaction about the actuarial analyst. As a a result, I think the job of actuarial analyst is very suitable for me.

The introduction of reporting analyst

The working area of reporting Analyst

The second job the PayScale recommend to me is reporting analyst. I think I am also satisfied for this job. Because according to the first picture(the introduction of reporting analyst) the gender breakdown is very slightly, which can allow me make female friends easily, and the salary of this job is also high enough for me. Then, the working surrounding showed in the second picture(the working area of reporting analyst) where people have a communication to each other about their works also makes me feel satisfied and I think people can get improvements in this area. However, compared with the first job, actuarial analyst, this job may makes feel slight difficult. By reading the introduction material that “Reporting analysts receive requests from all members of the management team so they must have strong task prioritization skills in addition to good statistical and critical thinking skills”, I think the reporting analysts have to keep busy to deal with all members of the management team, and just have a little to have a break. Also, I am lack in the ability of prioritization which is a ability to sat steps and choose the priorities when they have to figure out a lot of stuffs. However, every time when I have to deal with a lot of stuff, I always becoming anxious and mostly have no way to start with. So I think this job is kind of difficult to me.

Personal profile

That’s also one of the reasons why I like it, and another reason is because it tastes very nice. Also, my favorite hobbit is dance and I have learned ballet when I was six years old. I think dancing can allow me to feel comfortable and confident. There is an interesting experience to share about cycling. At one winter, I was riding my bike on the path. At a crossroad, I saw my right in front of me, a people facing me on the bike and out his right hand to me. Without my glasses, I thought I met someone I knew and tried to high-five me. So I sped up and held out my right hand to him. However, I found he became nervous and unstable, and then we knocked each other down. After a short communication, I learned that by reaching out my hand I meant to turn.

There are two reasons about why I choose Ohio State University.
First of all, my teacher recommended this university to me, and
she said this university is good at my major. Then I searched this
university online, and I found Ohio State is a safe and a small
place witch can allow me to pay attention to my study. Also, I
have some friends who are sophomores here, so I think I can
adapt to my college life easily and quickly with their help. My
major is mathematic which I’m good at and very interested in. I
think math is important to people’s life, and is a foundation to
each major, so I decided to choose mathematics as my major.
