Year in Review
[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. G.O.A.L.S.
- Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.
Within the undergraduate experience comes interactions with diverse people and ideas while learning. In my plans for my undergraduate education my global awareness will be developed by establishing relationships with the people I meet in class, through scholars and clubs, through internships and work studies, and other experiences. Each person has an experience and a connection to somewhere else and I plan to use that to become more aware of things that don’t directly affect me but are still important.
- Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Sometime while completing my undergraduate I plan to take part in research or an internship in order to get exposure to different processes and work experiences. During this experience I want to contribute to keeping things running smoothly or making progress on a project.
- Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
I chose to go into Chemical Engineering because I want to be challenged academically while also being able to have options about what I end up doing. Chemical engineers have a lot of options when it comes to jobs and are always in high demand. I also wish to help with renewable energy and environmental problems. Before I started at OSU I took a lot of my GE’s at my local community college. I focused on social science and art classes because I want to be well rounded and have exposure to many topics other then math and science.
- Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
I believe leadership is a very important skill that can be learned a refined. While at OSU I want to develop this by becoming involved with research and professional work environments and observing and learning from those in leadership positions and getting tips to become a better leader.
- Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]
Service to the communities which help me is a concept that remains constant in my life. I think that if I benefit from a community then I need to repay that with service for those in the community that need it. While in scholars I want to help give back to the Columbus community.
Career
[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career. Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated. Artifacts
One of the defining aspects of my high school experience and experience as a learner was my ability to be dual enrolled at my local community college. I got to take many types of classes, but one of the most important ones were my composition classes. This artifact is a final project from a Composition II class where students were required to pick a topic, do their own research, form a thesis, write a formal research paper, and then present the information to the class. This project is very important to me because it was one of the projects that gave me room to explore topics I cared about while also starting to acclimate myself to academic language. I learned a lot about organizing and planning, citing and evaluating sources, navigating academic research reports, and the overall disparity of healthcare for women.
Another important class that I was fortunate enough to experience was a basic drawing class. Drawing has always been a hobby of mine and taking a college level art course was great for learning about new mediums and techniques which I had never been exposed to before. Basic drawing helped build my visual, spatial, and technical skills while also being an escape from my math and science focused classes. Having a creative outlet helped to let my brain process other information and using my skill to add a visual element to concepts helped to learn them better. Overall, drawing will always be an escape and a hobby that is important to my mental wellbeing and growth while learning.
About Me
My name is Casey Littlejohn, I am a current first year at The Ohio State University as a Pre-Major in Chemical Engineering. As a learner I have always been committed to my studies and plan to continue to do so. I graduated from an Early-College program with a completed High School diploma as well as an Associates Degree in General Science. Furthermore, I have a working background in clerical and government work from my local Parks and Recreation and District court. Aside from work and school, community service is very important to me and I graduated with around 100 hours of service. Also, I have practiced realism in multiple mediums for 5 years and use art as a common pastime. For my future, I am interested in sustainability and petroleum engineering as career paths and hope to intern, work study, or participate in research within the next 2 years as well as stay in good academic standing. Within the next 3 years, I hope to use my associates degree and college credit to my advantage and finish a Chemical Engineering Degree.
