Personal profile

My name is Ziyang Ling, and my hometown is a city with history background, Anqing. Anqing is not a big city, but I enjoy my life in AnQing. With its different position, AnQing‘s economic level is lower than city nearby it, and therefore population of this city and basic construction are not as same as metropolis. However, what appeal me is life of ease and idleness in this city. And my families also agree with my opinion. My father is a doctor who is serious about his work. My mother is nurse working in the digestive system department.

Although my hometown is AnQing,I receive my high school education in ShangHai. As a foreigner to ShangHai, I adopted local life in brief time thanks to my friends who provide help to me. When I entered this school, I thought making friends is hard for me. But truth is that my classmates help me in both school and normal life, and then we become friends. Now I find that building friendship is not such difficulty for me. At same time, I keep my interest, basketball, in school. It takes me at least one hour to practice every day, which becomes part of my normal and do not take plentiful spare time.

In future, I will have college course in OSU and my major is computer and information science. In this new school, I want to construct new relationship and foster new interest. Because weakness in language may stop me from construct new friendship, I would devote myself into learning language and culture.

In the article, “Simple Ways to Optimize Your Mental Health While in College,” Michael Schroeder offers a list of ways students can protect (1) themselves from the academic and social demands of college.

Schroeder encourages students to pay attention to their own mood and feelings and emphasizes that getting help early for problems like anxiety and depression is very important. He says, “You needn’t be diagnosed with a mental health condition to benefit from taking steps to improve your psychological well-being”. (2)

One of the steps you can take, he says, is exercise.  He explains that endorphins and other natural chemicals from exercise can improve our mood and make us feel good.(4) Furthermore, he says,  not exercising can cause weight gain, which can also affect mental health.

According to Schroeder, what you eat is also important, since diet affects mood and anxiety. He warns students against quick fixes, like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs to boost mood.  He says these can result in bigger problems later.

Schroeder recommends mindfulness and meditation to help with uncomfortable situations and self-isolating behavior. He says mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment:  “Bringing awareness, acceptance, self-compassion, curiosity, and just noticing non-judgmentally those internal experiences as they’re arriving”.(3)  This, he says, is a good way to process difficult experiences or feelings.    Loving-kindness meditation, which he says is similar, is a practice by which we focus on positive experience and people and send thoughts and wishes to those we love.

Schroder argues that it is important to have outlets for coping with feelings and experiences, and for this he recommends journaling.  Also important, he says, is developing a network of social support – good friends and family – and staying in touch with them while avoiding people who are unsupportive.  According to Schroeder, not having a good social network put us at risk(5), and research shows that those who are socially connected are mentally and physically healthier.  He suggests scheduling family activities(6) on our “to-do” list.

Insufficient sleep, says Shroeder, can negatively affect brain function and even awaken any genetic predisposition to mental illness; therefore, he emphasizes, it is very important to keep enough quality sleep.

Finally, Schroeder encourages students to become involved in activities that give their lives meaning and purpose, such as volunteering to help others.  He says experts claim that this is a very effective way to improve mental well-being.

photo reflection(final draft)

Today I want to depict two important jobs I interested in. With great payment and chance to practice for further career, two jobs get my attention.

Director of construction

The result of web shows that first job for me is director of construction. After the examining resources, I think it is job for decision maker in specific part of company. I choose “want to be a boss” in the survey, so this result does not let me surprised. And the salary is really great reward for this important job. National Median Pay for this job is $123,500, which is appealing and reasonable (task and requirement can explain why payment is so kind). The task for this position is across field and need academic knowledge. To be a director of construction, assigning work, making plan and even reviewing past work is essential. And then, they should check the work of their employers and give feedback. Running a system in company, they have to pay attention to normal issue not related to professional field, managing budget and reporting. The requirement is hard as task for this position. First one is experience, and it also determines salary. Required time for related work can be 10 years for some jobs. The base for this job is one to four years. Degree level should be at least a bachelor for construction major. Other required skill such as using office suite can be possessed in short time. My major is computer science which is not related to this job, so requirement is strict for me. Although this job has high satisfaction and pleasuring payment, I think it is not a perfect job for me.

(He is an old director of construction. Because this position needs long-time live experience most directors of construction are old.)  From web: www.dembsdevelopment.com

Pilot, copilot, or flight engineer

It is the last one “best job for me”, but I think it sounds interesting. High salary is also offered in these positions. The national median pay is $107,500. What surprised me is requirement and education accordingly in these positions. Three jobs is mentioned at same time because they have same duty, ensuring aircraft safety during flight. The requirement is harsh and costly.

They should get a license before work. To fit the requirement, they have to pay for military training which responses to various situation in aircraft. But the requirement for other degree is not that important. Even high school level can be accepted. With the limitation at their work time, they have to be sense of self-control and on time. Healthy is also measurement to this job. And I think this job can really improve myself if I receive strict training. The responsibility for them forces them be serious to work all the time. Under pressure, attitude for their job and even future job can be serious, so they try to handle their work as perfect as they can. It is important for people to be self-control and serious in work time, which directly influences performance and improvement. If they transfer to other field, I believe that they can handle different problems as well.
