As a nurse educator my teaching goals include:
- Igniting a passion for the nursing profession
I hope to encourage my students to explore all that nursing has to offer. There are so many different roles a nurse can choose from. I plan to expose my students to as many of these roles as possible to open their eyes to the wide world of nursing. When a student shows interest in a specialty I will help them explore that passion and grow as a nursing professional within it. A deep seeded passion for nursing will help each student become a resilient nurse that takes pride in being a nursing professional.
- Developing a foundation where students apply evidence based care into everyday practice
Providing safe and effective patient care is a standard. My students will incorporate evidenced based practice in order to meet those standards. I will role model evidence based practice by accessing policies and applying current clinical guidelines into clinical practice. Nursing is an ever evolving art where you must keep current on evidenced based practice to ensure you are providing safe patient care.
- Creating confident nurses that are able to appropriately communicate and advocate for their patients
There are times, as a nurse, where you must be the voice for your patient to ensure that they receive the care they need. I will create an environment where they are able to gain confidence to be that voice and advocate for their patients appropriately. I will help the students to recognize that they are meeting their patients at a vulnerable time of their life. I will encourage my students to reflect on that and demonstrate compassion while communicating with their patients.
- Inspire students to critically think and be able to recognize when they need to ask for guidance
Throughout each clinical day students will be put into challenging situations where they must critically think. I will help my students to develop these critical thinking skills by creating a safe clinical environment where they are able to make mistakes and reflect upon them. My students will be encouraged to ask questions and seek out guidance when confronted with a new clinical presentation.
- Stress the importance of self-care and the positive impact it has on each clinical day
Nursing is a profession where we are constantly putting the needs of others before ourselves. We are also confronted with different types of trauma almost every day. This is why I plan to make my students aware of the importance of self-care and provide them with tips that they will be able to incorporate in their clinical day. Self-care promotes resiliency in the workplace that can be carried throughout their nursing career.
