Arts Scholars Semester Reflection

The Arts Scholars group has provided me with many opportunities to engage in the arts in Columbus and meet many other individuals who share similar interest. During the start of this semester, the transition into college was difficult, but the arts scholars group made finding a small community within such a big school easier. I found it difficult to feel a sense of belonging at Ohio State and debated transferring to another school multiple times. Though I still have no resolved this dilemma, I did find friends within the art scholars program who constantly support me. Another problem I am currently facing is my uncertainty in majors. I do not know exactly how I am going to resolve this, but I have signed up for classes and whether I enjoy those classes will indicate to me if my choice in major is a fit. I want to do something creative in the engineering field, but I have yet to decide what I want to do exactly. Arts scholars have played a large role in my enjoyment of this first semester. The art scholars group has expanded my views on the art community and has allowed me to engulf myself into these different art communities. Back in my hometown, I mostly spent my time with artists who draw, paint, and sculpt; however, at Ohio State, I have been able to see dance, musicals, and even perform in an ensemble myself. Joining the art scholars has benefitted me greatly, and it is a decision I do not regret. Next semester when we are no longer in a survey class, I plan to stay involved by trying to attend as many events as I can. I hope to be a great addition to the Arts Leadership Council and continue to have many events planned for the Arts Scholars group. I hope next semester I continue to participate in the events the scholar group holds, as well as learn what I want to do in the future.

EngageTheArts

When I was first told about the Engage the Arts project, I immediately knew I wanted to create a painting. Though I did not have an exact idea in mind, I continued to attend Arts Scholar events keeping this project in the back of my head. However, throughout the process, I was able to meet a variety of people who came from different backgrounds and had varying arts interest. Being exposed to people who are interested in a different type of art than I am has opened up my mind to more possible art projects and expanded my artistic abilities. Everyone is capable of bringing new ideas onto the table and inspired me to think of projects I would not have otherwise come up with. When talking to different Arts Scholars, I would always feel inspired as we share our experience within the arts and share project ideas. For my project, my inspiration stems from the Art Scholars rather than a physical piece of artwork. I plan to make three digital paintings on Procreate to showcase a few of the scholars who have been a part of my first semester at Ohio State. I plan to set up a small photoshoot in my dorm and then recreate these images to incorporate the surrealism art style in some way. I want to exaggerate my usage of color and create a piece that truly embraces the individuals in the Arts Scholar program. Though the paintings are currently a work in process, I hope to fully captivate the greatness held within the Arts Scholars.

OSU Reflection

My first week at Ohio State University, OSU, was a time full of new learning experiences. Classes required a lot more work than I had initially anticipated, and the change in workload forced me to learn to become more organized. Despite only being at Ohio State for one week, I had already begun to fall behind on assignments and even forget to do some of my homework. Realizing that I was struggling to finish my work was a big eye-opener for me. I knew that if I did not establish a better work ethic quickly, then my college career might not be as successful as it could be. For the coming semester, my plan is to complete my academic load a few days before the due date, but I know my past habits of procrastination might get the better of me at times. In addition to learning how to be more organized, I have also had to learn how to be more social. In highschool, I was always surrounded by friends and people I was familiar with; in college, it is the complete opposite. I never had to think about making friends before coming to Ohio State. This was one of the first times I had to force myself to branch out, attend club meetings, and talk to new people. I noticed I often isolate myself because I am so busy with homework assignments, and I hope as the year progresses, I will be able to balance my academic and social life better. Though keeping my life together seems difficult at the moment, I have hopes that I will be successful at the Ohio State University if I start applying the skills I have learned during the first week of school to the rest of the semester.
