Year in Review

This past year, my journey as a Freshman has been very adventurous with many ups and downs through the school year that taught me valuable lessons about myself and my future. As a first generation college student, I had a very hard time transitioning from high school to college during my first semester. It was challenging to move away from home and being in an environment where I didn’t know anyone. It was very difficult adjusting and trying to find new friends, working on time management, keeping up with academics, struggling to find my identity and fitting into organizations and just navigating everything at such a big campus with so many people at school. Even though there were times when I was down throughout the process of coming to college, I feel that I have learned many things as well. College has definitely affected my relationship I have with my family and friends, in a good way, because I learned to not take everything for granted and to be grateful of everyone I have. They have supported me and encouraged me to stay strong and to not give up. I value relationships very much and found a home on campus with Delta Phi Lambda Sorority Inc., a multicultural Greek sorority. The love, care, hope and support that my sorority has given me has really helped me to become more comfortable with myself and people around me, grow from my weaknesses, promote Asian awareness and have a place where I feel welcomed. I am really starting to love being at the Ohio State University and I feel that I am not lonely anymore because I found out more about myself, I found friends that were like me, I learned how to manage my time and take care of myself and I also learned how to cope with stress. I found out about who I am, how I work, how I think and how I form bonds and relationship with people.

Service Engagement:

Throughout the year, I was involved in many service opportunities. Most of them were completed through A Moment of Magic which is a nonprofit organization that visits medically vulnerable children at hospitals, schools, organization events and homes. Some of the events I have participated through A Moment of Magic are, Miracle League All Star Event, Good Neighbors of Central Ohio Picnic, Columbus Walk for Apraxia, Columbus Buddy Walk and Light the Night with Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Outside of AMOM, I have also volunteered with an after-school program called HAY Kids which promotes wellness and growth for underprivileged Asian American children in the community. Healthy Asian Youth (HAY) provides tutoring, mentor-ship, leadership training, and other educational needs to undeserved K-12 students in the Upper Arlington and West Side areas of Columbus. I am also a part of the Young Scholars Program (YSP) and am a Scholar Ambassador. As an Ambassador, I help build relationships and create meaningful experiences with current YSP high school students and help them prepare to become future Buckeyes.

About Me

Hello, my name is Mar Lin and I am from Akron, Ohio. I graduated from the National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM High School. I am a freshman and my major is pre-nursing. I want to become a nurse practitioner or a pediatrician, but ultimately, work in hospital helping others. I was born in Bangkok, Thailand and I moved to the United States when I was five years. My native language is Burmese. I am currently studying Chinese and I love it. This summer, I went to China, specifically Chengdu and Beijing. I love to read books, watch movies and play badminton. I like spending time with other people and hanging out with my friends. When I was in Akron, I also helped interpret for many refugees at places such as hospitals, schools and jobs. I am very excited and nervous to be at such a big university but I am ready to take on the challenges. I want to explore and be active in student organizations, volunteer and also study abroad.
