The LIFT Lab team was well represented at the 2023 Institute for Healthcare Improvement Forum. Dr. Quatman-Yates, Dr. Quatman, and collaborator Mindy Gabriel delivered an oral presentation on their work with the Community-FIT program. Additionally, Riley Summers, James Crick, Gabriel Alain, Carmen Quatman, and Catherine Quatman-Yates showcased more of the team’s work via poster presentations. Details of these presentations can be found with the attached photos.

The forum provided an amazing opportunity for our team to network with and learn from leaders in the healthcare quality space. We are already looking forward to the 2024 IHI Forum.

QI-Hub Featured in College of Medicine Winter Forum Celebration of Innovation

Dr. Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of the Ohio State College of Medicine, selected the Quality Improvement (QI) Hub as one of three exciting new programs to feature in the 2023 Winter Forum discussion. This forum was meant to share and celebrate the innovation and growth happening at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dean Bradford with Dr. Quatman-Yates, Dr. Alain, and Raquel discussing the QI-Hub on stage.

Dr. Catherine Quatman-Yates, PT, DPT, PhD and Gabriel Alain, PT, DPT, PhD(c) of the LIFT Lab were asked to speak on the QI-Hub and the impact it can have on The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio. The statewide effort funded by the Ohio Department of Medicaid and facilitated by the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center aims to support and train stakeholders across the state to access, collect and analyze data to influence decision making and facilitate health improvement initiatives.

Riley Summers Presents Poster at the Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival

The Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival is a research poster and presentation forum for students to share mentored research projects with the Ohio State academic community. Riley presented her poster titled Leveraging Quality Improvement Methods to Build an Evidence-Based Toolkit for Providing Trauma-Informed Care. She has been collaborating on this project with Timothy Rethorn, PT, DPT, Shana McGrath, MA, CCC-SLP, Joy Omslaer, LISW-S, and Catherine Quatman-Yates, PT, DPT, PhD since May of 2021. The team has been pilot testing a toolkit that includes education, strategies, and resources to facilitate clinician’s ability and confidence with providing trauma-informed care.

What a great opportunity to share our work and also learn from other students conducting research at Ohio State. Congratulations to Riley and the team!

Exploring the Impact of Specialty Clinics on Healthcare Utilization: Insights from Dr. Gabriel Alain’s Recent Study

LIFT lab member Dr. Gabriel Alain examined the effects of specialty clinics on other types of healthcare utilization in his recently published paper, Expenditures and Healthcare Utilization of Patients Receiving Care at a Specialized Primary Care Clinic Designed with and for Autistic Adults. This was done by focusing on Ohio State’s Center for Autism Services and Transition (CAST) clinic which was created to serve autistic patient populations. Previous studies found that patients at CAST had higher satisfaction, continuity of care, and preventative service use. Gabe compared health care utilization and expenditures between patients receiving care at CAST and a national sample of autistic adults. Gabe found that while CAST primary care was more expensive than traditional primary care, CAST patients had an overall reduction in expenditures and healthcare utilization.

Congratulations to Dr. Gabriel Alain for his publication! You can find the paper here!

LIFT Lab Team and Collaborators Present Posters at IHI Forum

Our team had the chance to learn from leaders in the healthcare quality improvement space in Orlando, Florida at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Forum while also presenting some of our own work. The LIFT Lab had four posters accepted for presentation, two of which were collaborations with Dr. Maryanna Klatt’s lab in the Center for Integrative Health related to the grant received by the Ohio BWC. See the titles and photos of the contributors with each poster down below!

We are thrilled to have had this opportunity, and we hope that we can attend this event again in the future.

Buckeye Pause Bundle Project Receives Over $1.4 Million Grant From the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation

The LIFT Lab, the Center for Integrative Health, and the Human Performance Collaborative have teamed up for the ultimate cross-collaborative project entitled: The Buckeye Pause Bundle: Augmenting State of Mind and Body as the Ultimate PPE. This multi-disciplinary team has received a nearly $1.5 million dollar grant from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC), which was created to fund the researching of novel personal protective equipment (PPE) and personal protective technology (PPT) for various professionals. The leaders of the project, Dr. Quatman-Yates and Dr. Maryanna Klatt were joined by Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Carol Bradford, Chief Clinical Officer for the Wexner Medical Center, Dr. Andrew Thomas, and the Ohio BWC Administrator, Stephanie McCloud to speak on the project and its importance for the healthcare workforce.

The Buckeye Pause Bundle adds new elements to the Mindfulness in Motion program previously developed by Dr. Maryanna Klatt. Participants in the study will have access to sound-proof respite pods throughout the Wexner Medical Center which will provide healthcare professionals a place to relax and focus on mindfulness practices during the workday. The participants in the study will also wear a biofeedback device so physiologic measures can be tracked throughout the study. The system will send push notifications to participants’ cell phones to prompt them to complete a mind-body protective exercise once a certain threshold is reached on their biofeedback device. This innovative project strives to give healthcare workers the tools and techniques needed to provide themselves with the same care they do for their patients and to help them avoid burnout.

“Describing the Value of Physical Therapy in a Complex System Using the Socio-Ecological Model” Published in JACPT

The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy (JACPT) recently published a manuscript led by Dr. James Crick and co-authored by LIFT Lab members Dr. Catherine Quatman-Yates, Dr. Carmen Quatman, Dr. Gabriel Alain, and Dr. Lisa Juckett. This collaborative effort applied complexity science principles to acute care physical therapy to provide perspective on the value of physical therapists in the hospital environment.

Congratulations to James and the rest of the LIFT Lab team on this great accomplishment! You can view the publication here!

LIFT Lab Provides Educational Videos in Partnership with Upper Arlington Fire Division for National Falls Prevention Awareness Week

In honor of September’s National Falls Prevention Awareness week, the Ohio Older Adults Falls Coalition highlighted different fall prevention and aging topics throughout the month. The organization invited members of the LIFT Lab and their collaborators at the Upper Arlington Fire Division to speak on the topic of Community Paramedicine through recorded trainings and presentations. Members from the LIFT Lab had the opportunity to speak on their expertise about Community Paramedicine. The purpose of these videos is to share experiences, ideas and tips for improving implementation of all prevention efforts across the state and nationwide.

We could not be prouder of these team members for spreading awareness and expanding our community’s knowledge on fall prevention.
