Columbus To-Do List #2

Getting out of the university district and experiencing Columbus is a fun and a great thing to do. On Saturday, November 10th, three Humanitarian Engineering Scholars girls and I traveled down through the Short North to the Arena District to get dinner. The place that we went to was called BareBurger. BareBurger is a charming and rustic build your own burger restaurant. The girls and I had a great time. We laughed, we talked, we took some pictures and overall it was a good experience. After dinner, we walked to the Short North. From there we walked around, went into some stores, and went to Jeni’s Ice Cream. The night was a lot of fun and I am thankful I got to spend time with friends and experience Columbus. I greatly enjoyed walking through the Short North and going into the shops as it is a very fun and unique area. I loved learning more about the people I was with and all of us sharing our goals of what we want to accomplish while we are here at Ohio State. I would highly recommend BareBurger and the Short North area. It was a great time with good food and unique shops. Overall, I am happy that I went and I will definitely go back and try out all the shops and the different types of cuisines the area has to offer.

Artifacts #2

An artifact from my first semester at Ohio State that explains who I am as a person  is a rubber duck in a graduation gown. I know that my sound weird; however, the rubber duck represents a lot of things going on in my life. The duck’s graduation outfit represents my goal of graduating and the reason why I am at school. It reminds me that I need to stay focused and work on my studies in order to get a degree. The fact that the duck is compressible also represents me. College has presented many trials and has really tested my strengths and abilities. I have experienced many lows and have felt very down at some points; however, just like the duck returning to its original shape, I have been getting better and I am trying to hone in my strengths to work through my trials. How I got the duck in the first place is also very symbolic of college life. I got the duck for free from a resource awareness event. This reminds me that I don’t have to struggle through my trials alone and that there are many resources on campus that are here to help me out with anything I need. The duck also represents the need for balance and to go out and have fun and take advantage of all of what college has to offer. Even though a rubber duck in a graduation gown is not the most conventional artifact, it is very symbolic of my life right now as it gives me hope and inspiration to keep pushing forward and reminds me that I have the tools to succeed.

Columbus To-Do List #1

On Saturday, October 20, my Humanitarian Engineering Group took a trip downtown to the Short North district to get lunch at the Melt Bar and Grill. We did not originally plan on going to the Melt. It was a spontaneous decision made by the group when one of us saw the outside of the building when we were riding the COTA towards downtown. Even though the day wasn’t planned, everyone had a good time. The food was good, the conversations were funny, and overall it was a fun experience. What I enjoyed most was the randomness of the act. The group had no original plan; we got onto the bus and decided to let anything happen. I greatly enjoyed learning about my fellow peers and seeing downtown and figuring out how the bus system works. What I would do differently is have a set plan and explore the shops in the local area. I would highly recommend the Melt Bar and Grill. It had great food, a trendy vibe, and it was great for large groups. Overall, the day was a success and I am happy that I was able to interact with my peers outside of class and homework.

About Me #2

My top results from the StrenghtsFinder Assignment were Achiever, Developer, Learner, Harmony, and Arranger. Upon completing the assignment, I was not surprised by the results since I have been growing and developing those strengths from an early age. I connect to Achiever in that I am always striving to do my best and achieve the best result. My motto in life is to put forth my best effort and make the greatest attempt to achieve the highest results. I connect with the developer strength in that I want everyone to succeed and grow together. I love seeing people achieve more and I am happy in doing my part of helping people become their best self. Because I personally love learning and being exposed to new things, I find that I can connect myself to the learner strength. Although learning can be frustrating, my love of new things outweighs the frustration of the process in the end. Harmony is a good strength for me because I always try to find the common ground and support others. I also find that I merge my objectives with others, as long as they are not drastically different, to create the least amount of conflict. I like to connect with others and help each other out rather than create conflict and debate. Lastly, I connect with the Arranger strength in that I enjoy managing and overseeing a lot of moving parts and variables and I love organizing and putting on events. I find that I am very flexible and adaptable, especially when a new or better plan or option presents itself. Overall, I can connect myself to all of my strengths and I find that they are very prevalent in my decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

About Me

Hello. My name is Sarah Lidonnice and I am a first-year student here at Ohio State in the College of Engineering. I am currently in engineering undecided; however, I am leaning towards civil engineering at the moment. I am also considering pursuing a minor in business or humanities.

I am a part of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars (HES) program and I am very involved in their various activities and volunteering service opportunities. I am also very involved here on campus as I am a part of a variety of clubs. Some of these clubs include Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and their big little program, Residence Hall Advisory Council, various religious organizations such as Cru & H2O, Block O, Squash Club, and Casual Sports Club. Volunteering and involvement are very important to me and I am planning to take advantage of the opportunities Ohio State and HES has to offer.

Some of my goals include doing volunteer service abroad, obtaining a leadership position in SWE, and eventually using engineering to help others. I am also considering studying abroad over spring break in my sophomore year. I greatly enjoy my engineering classes and I hope I will find an engineering field that best fits to my interests. My ultimate goal is to help others in any way I can and I hope that engineering will allow me to create and implement designs and models that will help build a better world.

Artifacts

The artifact that best represents my academic interests and achievements is my mystic knot. A mystic knot is a Feng Shui good luck charm in the Chinese culture. I received my mystic knot on the last day of highschool when the foreign exchange student from China in my class gave it to me. Over the year and during track season, I grew very close with this student. I saw him a lot because he was very supportive of the school and he would be at my games and other events throughout the year. Towards the end of the school year, we started to talk about college and future plans and on the last day of school, he gave me the mystic knot as his way of saying good luck. It meant a lot to me and everytime I see it, I reflect on the positive experiences I had in school. Because it means good luck, my thoughts are redirected to my friends and family who support me and wish me luck in life. It brings me joy and reminds me that I have a support system out there when I am feeling overwhelmed. Also, the fact that it looks like a tassel, reminds of the ultimate goal of graduating college. This artifact directs me towards moments of triumph and overcoming trials and the lessons I learned, and it reminds me that I will get through this. The artifact also symbolizes my interests in academics as well as other hobbies such as basketball and coordinating events because the artifact is my school’s colors. I will use this artifact as inspiration and as hope in the fact that I can get through trials and I will view it in a calming sense in that I know that I am not alone and I have people who love and support me and only wish the best in my life. This artifact shows that even though I may struggle, I am able to come out on the other side.  It reminds me to be driven and hardworking and to stay focused on my goals. Overall, this mystic knot brings a sense of peace to my life when I look at it and it inspires me to keep pushing forward and give my best in all that I do.
