REMINDER: 2024 Licking County 4-H Advisor Trainings

Licking County 4-H Club Advisors…

It’s time to make plans to attend a 2024 Advisor Training session!
Please take just a moment or two to read through this information…

WHEN / WHERE: We encourage you to mark your calendar for Saturday, January 27th (9:00 a.m.) at Ohio State Newark – Reese Center – no registration necessary, as we hope that all of you can attend! But…if you’re not available for that session, please email Lisa to let us know if you need to attend one of the alternative dates (February 5th, 14th or 28th / 7-8:30 p.m.), which will be held at the Licking County Extension Office. Because those three dates are considered back-up, and have a much smaller capacity than that January 27th date, YOU MUST REGISTER if you plan to attend February 5th, 14th or 28th trainings – simply email Lisa and she will add you to the list (as long as space is available).

LOCATION: We’ll be in the Auditorium at the Reese Center, where we also hold the Style Revue and Recognition Event each July. There will be plenty of seating, as well as parking, for all… We will also have Resource Fair tables set up outside of the Auditorium for Advisors to visit following the update.

WHAT: If you’re planning to attend the January 27th training (and we really hope you will), you’ll participate in a training update from 9-11:00 a.m., and then have time from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to enjoy the RESOURCE FAIR! We will have a trade show area set up for you to ask questions, look at new materials, interact with key resource leaders, etc. – or you can just take a few minutes to sit and speak with other advisors about what’s working for them! That time is for YOU! We want to support you, and the Resource Fair can serve that purpose! Note: If you must attend the February 5th, 14th or 28th dates, please know that only training will be provided due to space and time limitations.

WHY: All 4-H Club Advisors within the state of Ohio are required to attend an annual training. This training will include an introduction to anything that’s new, review of any issues that have been encountered over the past year, reminder about the important dates and deadline, emphasis on new tasks that may be needed, etc. Training is intended to support you and provide you with information and resources that will make your work as an advisor more enjoyable, more manageable, and more rewarding!

We would encourage Organizational Advisors to touch base with all advisors within their club to determine which training they will attend, as we want to ensure that everyone actually reads this information and has a plan to meet their training requirement. Those adults working through the selection and screening process currently (potential new advisors) are welcome to attend this training alongside other advisors from the club.

This event has been cancelled for 2024.

Do you have a 4-H member who plans to take a 4-H Natural Resources Project in 2024? If so, please save the date for the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s 4-H Project Day in the Park!

What is it? A partnership program between 4-H and ODNR to promote our State Parks and Careers in Natural Resources. (See longer explanation below if you are interested in helping) 😊

What will 4-H members get to do? 4-H members will have the opportunity to sign up for one or both 4-H project sessions. They will work with professionals in those fields and complete at least two activities in their 4-H Project books that day!

Cost? As of right now the event is free!

Where? Deer Creek State Park in Mount Sterling, Ohio

Date/Time? May 18, 2024 – Tentative schedule right now is from 9:45 am – 3:00 pm (families can stay for two sessions or just come for one)

  • Extra pencils
  • Snacks for participants who forget a packed lunch (Goldfish, fruit snacks)
  • Extra bottled water
  • First aid

If you are interested in helping with this project, they are looking for additional session presenters. They are also looking for teens who might be interested in being session helpers and group leaders to move people where they need to be.

Projects for this year have not been selected and could be based on presenter interest. Focus project are those listed under Natural Resources in the family guide.

ODNR’s goal for this event: To introduce their State Parks to the next generation. They have seen declining park visitors over the past 10 years, but with COVID there was a renewed interest in being outside and in nature. ODNR recognizes this opportunity and is reaching out to groups who work with youth to keep this interest growing. They have been doing large state projects with the scout groups and now have reached out to 4-H.

4-H Opportunity for this event: To introduce our 4-H members to professionals who work in the field of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. Introduce them to careers they may have never heard of before. To give them that opportunity to take their natural resources project beyond what they can do on their own and to use this as a leadership opportunity.
