ExploreAg Camps for High School Students

Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation is excited to be offering its signature ag literacy and workforce development program, ExploreAg, again in 2023.

ExploreAg offers FREE weeklong camps and one-day experiences for high school students. Students are introduced to various aspects of agriculture, food science, environmental sciences, and more, both in the classroom and through opportunities for hands-on learning both on and off-campus at the Ohio State University, University of Findlay, and Wilmington College. Students will interact with and learn directly from internationally known teachers, scientists and researchers.

Subject areas include food science, precision agriculture, animal science, natural resources, management skills, technology, and agricultural business. In addition to the classroom experience, scholars will participate in field experiences that highlight cutting-edge research and meet industry partners to provide a glimpse of various careers in related fields.

ExploreAg is designed for students currently in traditional agriculture education programs and for students who might never have considered studying agriculture as a career.

Weeklong immersive sessions will be held:

  • The Ohio State University Columbus Campus – June 11-16
  • The Ohio State University  ATI Wooster Campus – June 18-23
  • University of Findlay- July 9-14

Mini-Camp immersive sessions will be held:

  • Wilmington College – June 4-7
  • Hocking College – July 31- Aug. 2

One-Day scheduled immersive sessions will be held:

  • COLT Electric Lineman Training – June 9
  • Rio Grande College – June 30
  • John Deere Training Facility – July 7

Note: More one-day sessions are being planned.

The ExploreAg program is free to all high school students and includes on-campus accommodations, meals, staffing, program materials, and transportation. Supervision is provided at all times by faculty, staff, and program counselors who are current college students in related majors.

The deadline to apply is April 10 and details can be found at exploreag.org. Applicants will be asked to submit the email of one reference along with a short application. Students selected will be notified in April of their selection.

2023 4-H Advisor Training

Licking County 4-H Advisors! A reminder to make sure that you are planning to attend one of the THREE advisor trainings that are being held this year. We would love to see as many of you as possible attend the first training on Saturday, January 28th at Licking Valley Elementary. Not only will this be the first opportunity to get your club packet, but after the training we will have a resource fair immediately after the training. We have worked to gather resources and community groups from around the county that we think will be beneficial to your work as a club advisor. If you are unable to attend the training on January 28th, please be sure to let Lisa McCutcheon know which of the other two trainings you will be attending. The other two trainings will be at the Extension Office so space is limited and we will not have the resource fair following the training at the two later dates.

WHEN / WHERE: We encourage you to mark your calendar for Saturday, January 28th (9:00 a.m.) at Licking Valley Elementary School no registration necessary, as we hope that all of you can attend! But…if you’re not available for that session, please email Lisa McCutcheon to let us know if you need to attend one of the alternative dates (February 16th or 21st / 6-8:00 p.m.), which will be held here at the Extension Office. Because those two dates are considered back-up, and have a much smaller capacity than that January 28th date, YOU MUST REGISTER ASAP if you plan to attend February 16th or February 21st trainings.

LOCATION: Licking Valley Elementary School: We will be meeting in the cafeteria. You can enter from either side of the building, with parking on both sides as well as the back. If you park in the back, you will need to walk around front to the cafeteria entrance. You are also welcome to park around the loop, if space permits – but stay off the grass! We would certainly encourage carpooling, as we hope to have at least 180 advisors in attendance, and the school will also be hosting basketball games that same morning (they will be using different entrance)…

WHAT: If you’re planning to attend the January 28th training (and we really hope you will), you’ll participate in a training update from 9-11:00 a.m., and then have time from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to enjoy the newly added RESOURCE FAIR! We will have a trade show area set up for you to ask questions, look at new materials, interact with key resource leaders, etc. – or you can just take a few minutes to sit and speak with other advisors about what’s working for them! That time is for YOU! We want to support you, and the Resource Fair can serve that purpose! Note: If you must attend the February 16th / 21st dates, please know that only training will be provided due to space and time limitations. Note: We are not holding a Discover 4-H event immediately after the training, as it had been held in the past. Discover 4-H is being held on other dates, and in other locations…

WHY: All 4-H Club Advisors within the state of Ohio are required to attend an annual training. This training will include an introduction to anything that’s new, review of any issues that have been encountered over the past year, reminder about the important dates and deadline, emphasis on new tasks that may be needed, etc. Training is intended to support you and provide you with information and resources that will make your work as an advisor more enjoyable, more manageable, and more rewarding!

Making eXtreme Counselors (MXC) Registrations Due

Older youth age 14 to 18 who plan to serve as camp counselors or are interested in improving their camp counseling skills are invited to Making eXtreme Counselors (MXC)–an interactive and quick-paced training that offers innovative camp ideas to new and veteran camp counselors. MXC participants will leave with skills that will enable them to assist in their county’s camp program planning and delivery, and prepare them to deliver a great camp program to their campers.

MXC is a national award-winning workshop that will be useful for all potential camp counselors. Don’t miss your chance to participate—the event will be offered in person again in 2023, on FEBRUARY 25 to 26 (Arrival 2/25 around 1:00 p.m.; departure 2/26 around 3:00 p.m.). Counselors will earn camp counselor training hours while attending this event (number of hours is determined by county).  All participants will be able to share and gain ideas with teens from other counties all across the state.

Registrations are due by noon on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Details and registration information can be found HERE.
