A Busy Spring Ahead for the Lichen Likers

The second week of the spring semester, many of the Lichen Likers got together to share progress of their components on the project, as well as look ahead to the rest of the semester.

Led by Amy Youngs and Doo-Sung Yoo and joined by Madison Blue, Brennan Jones, Ophelia Kruse, Sam C, and Jiara Sha, the Lichen group welcomed back Alex Buchan a recent Ohio State B.F.A. graduate, now working towards his MFA at Ohio University.

From Jones’ further work on the augmented reality of different lichen species to Kruse and Blue’s ideas for more wearable lichen exhibitions, the Lichen Likers are excited to share more of their work with Ohio State and beyond.

This week’s costume design

In the past few weeks, I’ve been making costumes for the participants of our show to wear. They’re mostly lichen sticks and fabric scraps. I chose earthy colors and allowed the sticks to balance on the shoulders/backs of the participants.

I’m now working on a costume to resemble mycorrhizal fungi for Maddie and I to wear. I want to incorporate the algae yarn because the textures are similar. I want to make a hat that draws reference from this historical style:

Reference 1:Nika Danielska

Reference 2: Fairytale Creators

The dresses could play with transparency and be flowy. I like the contrast between a soft flowy dress and a piece like this which could be made with metal wire and papermache.
