Lichen Augmented Reality

Augmented reality image by Lichen Likers

We wanted to see large lichens appearing in our social media worlds. And we wanted to share them with you to play with. We started by making 3D models of lichen by taking photos of them with our cellphones and sending them to a photogrammetry software tool called Mesh Fountain. It was developed by our colleague at the Ohio State University, Jeremy Patterson. We are fortunate that he was able to help us figure out how to use it for a tiny specimen like lichen.

You can download and view the 3D models on your iOS device. You can also make them seem gigantic by “placing” them into your own environment and scaling them up on your phone and taking photos.
