Reflection Project

What is the best job for me? It is complicated I can’t answer, but aspire to be answered. It is amazing that Website PayScale can answer it by just six easy questions. It tells me Product Designer and commercial or industrial designers are more appropriate for me than others.

Although there are 4 to 5 years for me to make a real choice and the future is unpredictable, I prefer to think it over seriously as making a real decision.

Product Designer

Product Designer is one of my choices. It is a typical creative job and means continuously challenge and inspiration. The designer’s own ideas and opinions are realized in a real product. A product designer’s work quality and delivery are directly and clearly assessed by the selling of his or her product. If a product succeeds in the market, its designer will achieve great respect not only from his or her company but also from society. Steve Jobs is a good example and icon product designer. Therefore, PayScale’s investigation that it has a high job satisfaction of 70% does not surprise me at all. Moreover, according to the investigation, this job has less job stress of 38% and a high job meaning of 33%. High job satisfaction and meaning but lower stress are key factors that I choose Product Designer as my future job choice.

However, there are no perfect things in this world. According to this website’s salary searching tools. This job in China has a salary range from ¥19k to ¥513k and an average of ¥200k. Also, it tells us 5 years is the median experience of this job. It means during the beginning years I can only get the bottom salary of ¥19k, by which I can hardly survive in Beijing. Moreover, in Chinese company systems, if you cannot enter the management class in a company, the future of your career will be unstable. High competition is common in every field. This means that each year a bunch of young people will compete with you in the same job. They are more passionate, more creative, and lead the fashion of the world. In a deigning job, how can you keep on with them? They may replace you in years or even several months. So, for me, it is not a good choice if consider it in China. It is less stable and less permanent.

Commercial or Industrial Designer

For the second chosen job, Commercial or Industrial designer, it is the same kind of job which has the same common major as Design and Applied Arts as Production Designer. This job has the same satisfaction as the first one and average work stress. This job is more incorporated with math and computer science which is the major in the direction of me. The industrial design needs more accurate calculation and management. It needs to set up some math models to make it more efficient and appropriate. This job is more dependent on the knowledge you got rather than the design you make. It needs more experience than the first job. Also, this job has a higher salary than the Production designer. Since it needs experience too makes it better, this job is more stable. Young people need to accumulate their experiences step by step to let them be more reliable since industrial is a series thing.
