Week 3: January 29 – February 2nd

Let the madness begin, February is packed full of interviews for potential interns. On Monday, as part of outreach, I was put in charge of setting everything up for our team to go to the CFAES spring career expo. Our company has never been to a career expo before so I had to start from scratch. I took it upon myself to create pamphlets to hand out at the expo. This is what I spent most of Monday and some of Tuesday working on. I created the brochure using Photoshop and InDesign. I had a lot of fun creating this brochure as I didn’t have much experience with either program before beginning this internship and now i’m able to practice it so much in the internship.

Friday we began interviews. In order to prepare for these interview, I had to make copies for the other two persons interviewing the intern. Once the intern arrived to the office, I greeted him and brought him to our meeting room where we held the interview. After the interview was over, I took him on a tour of the farm and gave him a brief overview of our history and what we do now. This will be a routine that I go through with all of the following interns.

Week 2: January 22nd – January 26th

This week consisted mostly of emailing interns. We received A LOT of applications…much more than we expected. I printed out resumes, cover letters, etc and sat down with my supervisor to begin selecting interns. After we discussed our picks, I emailed potential interns and began setting up interviews. I continued to work on the intern packet and made changes as necessary.

On Wednesday, I was given a new project. I needed to create an ad for a flush heifer on the farm. I used a combination of Photoshop and InDesign to create the ad and submitted it Friday afternoon.

Week 1: January 15th – January 19th

This was my first week working for my internship at the Ohio Heifer Center. Ohio Heifer Center is a very large farm in South Charleston, OH. With over 5,000 animals, it’s much more than an ordinary dairy farm. It is more of research farm than a dairy farm as there are several research trials happening all the time. The purpose of my internship is to market the farm and its research. This is the first year for the communications internship so I am excited to be the first intern and help develop the internship further with my input.

The farm also has an animal science internship that hires 6 students to work hands-on on the farm. Part of my duties includes setting up this internship. This is what I spent most of my week doing. I typed up an informational page for the internship and was in charge of posting the information to various sites including Hire-a-buckeye, National Dairy Shrine, and several collegiate dairy clubs throughout the United States. Additionally, I began creating an intern information packet using Adobe InDesign.
