Year in Review

G.O.A.L.S. as of Spring 2019

Global Awareness:

I have taken and plan to continue to take courses that expose me to cultures that are not my own. So far, I have taken a World Geography class that allowed me to learn about how people come to be where they are and how cultures develop, and I plan to take more classes that will give me a more in-depth knowledge of specific locations. As an English major, I am studying literature from different cultures and time periods, which also broadens my knowledge of the world and its people.

Original Inquiry:

Several of the courses I have taken have taught me how to take a closer look at the world around me through the lenses of politics, literature, history, and geography. I continue to learn to study literature with a critical eye, considering the period in which it was written, the context of the author’s life, and the hidden themes and agendas each work may harbor. In this way, I am constantly discovering new ideas and forming new connections between literary works and history.

Academic Enrichment:

I chose to study English because reading and examining literature has always been important to me and I believe the study of literature is critical in developing the minds of every human being. Whether a student intends to take deep looks at works and their contexts or simply wants to enjoy a good story, reading is one of the best ways she can improve herself. I hope to one day be a professor at a university where I can help students understand and enjoy literature, whatever their long-term goals may be. My studies now are fascinating to me, and I hope to similarly fascinate the students I will one day teach.

Leadership Development:

I am a member of the Athletic Band and a leader within my section. Although the position is unofficial, I am largely responsible for making sure each member of my section understands their individual responsibilities within the group. Beyond that, I am available to help others with their music, general marching, or positions on the field when we perform a show. I am occasionally asked to report to band staff about my section, and I have mediated disagreements between members of my section in the past. Despite its informal capacity, this position has allowed me to use and learn many leadership skills, and it will continue to do so throughout my time at Ohio State.

Service Engagement:

My membership within the Athletic Band not only teaches me leadership skills but also, I believe, allows me to serve my community. Members of the band are required to attend a certain number of events each semester, but beyond that, many of us attend extra events simply to bring excitement and joy to the crowd. I often attend a few extra events per semester, and I have also traveled with the band to accompany athletic teams to tournaments and to miscellaneous events around the state. As I continue in my education, I plan to look for more opportunities to serve my community, both through the Athletic Band and outside of it.

G.O.A.L.S.

My G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: In order to expand my cultural knowledge, I would like to study abroad at least once during my undergraduate career, preferably in France. In high school, I took several years of French, and I would like to experience the language firsthand. I also plan to take classes that expose me to other cultures. Next semester, I’m taking a religious studies class, which I hope will give me a wider perspective overall.

Original Inquiry: In my time at Ohio State, I would like to get involved in undergraduate research in the physics department. I hope to research under Dr. Amy Connolly on her ANITA project if possible, although I know that isn’t guaranteed. I job shadowed her in my junior year of high school, and I was fascinated by the work she does. I hope to use my research to broaden my own knowledge and experience, and also to positively impact whatever project I end up working on.

Academic Enrichment: Throughout my four years here, I plan to take honors classes that both interest and challenge me. I also hope to maintain good study habits that I am developing now, as these will help me continue to challenge myself with rigorous coursework. I also would like to stay dedicated to physics, which, in itself, can be a difficult field of study.

Leadership Development: As a student in Survey, I learned a lot from the peer mentors, and I would like to become one myself. It’s important to me to inspire and help other people, and I feel like this position would allow me to do so easily. Hopefully I have enough insightful information to share with the students, and I’m sure I will learn more about Ohio State while preparing presentations for the class.

Service Engagement: I hope to get involved with some service organizations on campus, and I will continue to serve on my own time when I can. I haven’t done much this semester, but I plan to increase my involvement as time goes on and as I get used to college life. Some opportunities that have interested me so far include volunteering at animal shelters and helping to teach kids about science.
