Biochemistry Magnet

FullSizeRenderBefore I even considered what my major was going to be, I went to an open house at Ohio State which had booths set up for all of the different science majors. I knew that I wanted my major to relate to science as I aspire to apply to Veterinarian school after graduation. However, I was having trouble deciding which major would better prepare me for my path. I needed a major that would allow me to stand out in my application, prepare me for the GRE or MCAT, and allow me to pursue a different career if my plans changed. At each booth, I talked to professors that taught classes in that major and gained insight into what each one entailed. I was contemplating majoring in chemistry or biology when I stumbled upon the biochemistry booth. I already had a good feeling about it since it combined the two majors I was in between. After talking with the professors at the booth, I felt very strongly that it was the right choice for me. They gave me a magnet that says “The Department of Biochemistry” on it with a periodic table. Once I moved into my dorm during welcome week, I put it on my fridge as a symbol of my major, my passion, and my drive for completing my undergraduate career.

This year, I am enrolled in General Chemistry and next year will be enrolled in Organic Chemistry. I have always had a passion for chemistry throughout high school and this magnet is a reminder of my love for the subject. I use it when I do my chemistry homework and plan on using it throughout the rest of college. It symbolizes all of the hard work I put into getting accepted into the university and what I strive for in the future. Organic chemistry will challenge me in ways I cannot foresee, however, I hope to use this artifact to remind me that all of my strenuous work will pay off in the end.

About Me

My name is Katherine Lewis but everyone calls me Katie. I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and went to Hilliard Davidson High School. I was involved in the Chemistry, Math, and French club at my high school and also helped coordinate the special needs prom for every student in the Columbus area with a disability. Both of my parents and older sisters went to The Ohio State University which influenced my decision when applying for schools. Also, I aspire to be a veterinarian and Ohio State has one of the top veterinary schools in the country. Some of my academic goals for this year are to study more spread out throughout the week rather than a couple days before a test and to make sure I can balance my academic and social life more evenly. One experience that shaped who I am today was being able to volunteer at a gift giving event for the homeless during the holidays. It made me aware of how lucky my situation is and solidified my desire to help others in my future career. I got involved with the honors and scholars program and specifically the Biological science scholars program at Ohio State to broaden my network of people interested in similar career paths as me and to be exposed to many opportunities which will enrich my knowledge and desire to graduate and move on to professional school.
