Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: To me, global awareness means having a well-rounded understanding of the world outside of Columbus. It means stepping out of your comfort zone in order to learn more about the world. I hope to achieve this in two ways. One, I hope to study abroad. Experiencing different parts of the world first-hand is the best way to learn. If this opportunity arises, I will put myself fully into the experience and gain as much knowledge as possible. Another way to learn more about the world is to study the cultures near you. Ohio State is home to some of the most diverse cultures. Therefore, while studying abroad is an amazing opportunity that should be taken if given the chance, there is also so much to learn within the boundaries of our very campus. Appreciation for diversity can be attained in many ways, but should be something to strive for.
  • Original Inquiry: Something that must be learned as an honors student is original inquiry. Thanks to the successful and helpful staff at Ohio State, students will be taught to develop their own ideas and thoughts through asking questions. This is easy to say, but it is also easy to think, “Where do I start?” or “How do I start to develop these independent thoughts?”. Something that would clearly provoke thoughts and ideas is a challenging course. Challenging yourself is a great way to learn more about yourself and how to develop thoughts. Another good way to produce original ideas is through research opportunities. A good way to start in research is to contact a staff member who researches a topic which interests you. From here, you can begin to learn more about the way people think and ask questions in order to learn. The, hopefully, you will be able to begin your own research project, teaching others how to learn the same thing you had to in order to find the most interesting question to research. Not only does research look good on a graduate school application, but it also shapes a more well-rounded individual.
  • Academic Enrichment: Academic enrichment means achieving academic goals, growing as a student, and challenging yourself by learning in new ways and teaching others. As an honors student, academic enrichment is an important and vital part of education. Setting goals is a start to any academic enrichment. By setting goals, there is a combination of self-challenging behavior as well as growth. An important aspect of academic enrichment is growing as a student. This means finding new ways to learn and adapting to different learning environments. Not every class will require you to make notecards and memorize definitions. While that may be a good and effective way to study, a growth mindset can begin to understand more conceptual ideas. Finally, teaching others is one of the best ways to work on academic enrichment. Not only is there joy in watching others grow, but information will become easier to understand if you can readily teach the topic at question.
  • Leadership Development: Leadership is essential as an honors student. There are many ways to achieve leadership skills. One way is in the classroom. Honors students agree to take on more rigorous coursework throughout college. Therefore, it is important to develop leadership abilities in the classroom. This can occur not only through assisting other students, but also thoroughly understanding lectures and going above and beyond to do well. Others can watch your hard work and determination and decide to act the same. Leadership can also come from community work and co-curricular activities. An important goal of mine is working to start a club, whose goal is to raise money for an orphanage in Thailand that is special to me. This would be a great opportunity to display my leadership abilities. Leadership development is important for future societal circumstances. As an adult, leadership is essential in a family, a job, and even among friends. Therefore, developing those skills now is useful for the future.
  • Service Engagement: Service is important to learn more about the community. Ohio State offers many clubs and student organizations which contribute time and energy into serving the community. This is something I can look into to become more involved and helpful. As a pre-med student, service is very important to me. Helping others is not only fun, but also rewarding.
