Dream Journal

As evident by some of my other work I have done in this class, I am a huge Star Wars fan. Unsurprisingly a lot of my dreams have a futuristic motif. In this dream specifically there were large spaceships overhead. The setting of the image was also very important to the plot of the dream. I was with my cousins at their house in Tampa, Florida. I have spent a lot of my time at my cousins house and I always remember it fondly. The house has been in the family for around 50 years and it has always been the center place of my extended family on my Dad’s side. It sits right on the water in Tampa bay with an old red dock extending in the water. Whenever I go back home to visit I always visit my cousins house and sit on the dock to watch the sunset go down in front of me.

This image was the center of the dream as I remember it. I was at my cousins house watching the sunset, when I saw a large spaceship appear in the sky heading towards another planet I could see in the sky. After this the dream gets a lot more confusing to follow. I end up being put in charge, along with my two cousins, to pilot the ship to the lava covered planet in the distance. Upon arriving we receive information that self replicating droids have infested the molten planet and intended to take over earth and the rest of the galaxy. In order to stop them we had to go down to the planet to stop the central computer. We ended up having to swim through lakes of lava to get to the underground facility which housed the computer. After using a lightsaber I found we took out some droids and destroyed the main computer. This is as much as I can remember of the dream.

Making the Image:

I started with this background that I found on pexels. The dock reminded me so much of my cousins dock that I knew it would be perfect.

Next I wanted to add a molten planet and a spaceship to my image. Since I could not find anything like this on pexels I had to improvise a little. To create the planet I found a picture of the sun I thought would work and removed the excess of the picture using the magic eraser. Next I just added it into a separate layer. I experimented with blend modes and found that the lighten mode was perfect for what I was going for. The space ship was a little more tricky to create. I first took a picture I found of an aircraft carrier and began erasing until it looked a little bit more space craft. I wanted a really dark metallic appearance to the spaceship so I used the multiply blend mode.

I thought the image looked a little crowded at this point and I wanted to draw more attention to the spaceship and the way it draws the eye towards the planet. I found the best way to do this was to remove the small ship that was in the original background image. This was done using the patch healing tool. At first it left some weird lighting on the water but I corrected this using a mixture of the spot healing brush, and paintbrush with eyedropper tool.

The final piece I wanted to add was myself watching as the ship passed overhead. I achieved this by finding a silhouette image of a man from behind, removing the unwanted background and adding it in. I scaled it down so the man looked proportional at the end of the dock.
