Year in Review- Year Two

Sophomore Year G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I started my Honors Arts and Sciences journey as an International Studies major before switching to Economics. In this time, I only took one course with an international focus, INTSTDS 4195 with Dr. Mirzaie, where we focused on women’s roles in world development and globalization. This class inspired me to take another female-focused course, and I took Women’s Global Health with Dr. Piperatta for my second biological science requirement. These classes deepened my interest in having a global perspective, especially through the inclusive lens we studied other countries and cultures. In the future, I plan to take an economic history course that studies other economic systems in non-Western countries and do a Spanish immersion program before studying abroad with international students at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom in Summer 2019.

Original Inquiry: I contributed minimally to a research project last summer, conducted research through internship opportunities in the Statehouse and on Capitol Hill, and have been exposed to research conducted by peers, professors, and non-OSU affiliates. Through these interactions, I have decided to begin the process of pursuing honors research next year. Although I have not yet found a topic or professor, I am excited to begin this process and find a perfect fit for my final project at Ohio State. In terms of creative endeavors, I developed my passion for the arts last year by joining the African American Voices and performing gospel songs with them and participating in a ceramics class every Tuesday at a Columbus Community Center.

Academic Enrichment: As mentioned, I recently chose to change my major to more accurately reflect my interests and commitment to excellence. This change has also allowed me to have flexibility in a double major and general education requirement, so I can also pursue a degree in the Glenn College and take general education courses that interest me on a personal level. My interests in policy, economics, gender, and racial equality influence the classes I enroll in, allowing me to mold my undergraduate experience into something I will truly use later in my education and career. I have taken and excelled in several demanding and high-level courses thus far, and I plan to continue to do that throughout my time at Ohio State. Additionally, I participated in the Glenn College’s Washington Academic Internship Program as a sophomore, which allowed me to enrich my academic repertoire and pursue my career goals at the same time.

Leadership Development and Service Engagement: I have not yet had the opportunity to fulfill a leadership role in my time at Ohio State, choosing activities and causes that I could contribute to wholeheartedly and really make a difference. I have participated in organizations such as USG, BSA, and AAV, volunteered in the community with organizations like the Columbus Refugee and Immigrant Services and the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus, study, work and volunteer in Washington, DC for a semester, work on political campaigns, etc. I know I am fully capable of holding a leadership position, but I believe that my experiences so far have shown leadership in their own way.
