Artifact #3

For my first artifact as a second year member of Mount Leadership Society, I decided to include an image of what I see myself doing in the next 3 years or so. Last school year my major was Early Childhood Education. Over the summer I learned more and I grew as a person, and in turn I decided that the field of education was not the right fit for me. Although, I knew I still wanted to help people. I came upon speech pathology, and all of my research led me to love the career more and more. I can’t wait to see what the future holds including internships and shadowing other speech pathologists in the area.

For my second artifact, I have chosen to use a picture of a trip I went on my junior year of high school. Out of everyone taking French in my school, only twelve people were selected to go on the two week trip to France. I was fortunate enough to be selected, and the experience was one I will never forget. Half of the time we spent in Paris, and during this time we lived in our host families’ apartments. I shared a room with a girl my age, and the fact that her entire family only knew little English was definitely a challenge to overcome. During this trip my classmates and I were also graded on speaking French. We were instructed to only speak French- the whole entire time! Even if we were just talking to each other, we had to converse in French. I believe this artifact is meaningful, because I definitely grew as a person throughout these two weeks. Not only did my French improve, but I had to learn how to overcome challenges as well as take on big responsibilities. I was living on my own in the host family’s house, and when we were in hotels, we were also on our own. The experience was unforgettable, and no doubt prepared me for adulthood.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

This year, for my second year service project I have chosen to volunteer at Grant Medical Center. Initially I chose to volunteer at a hospital because it would give me experience working in that type of setting which I am planning on working at in the future as a speech pathologist. Although, I believe I am getting more than just experience volunteering at Grant; I am becoming aware of the economic situations for many who live in Columbus and the importance of access to healthcare for these individuals. My job is to work at the emergency department so I am constantly communicating with visitors and patients that need assistance or direction. I notice that my positive attitude and willingness to help brings light to these people who are often scared, angry, stressed, or all of the above. I act as a leader for those at the hospital who need someone to alleviate their worries or assist them in tasks and I am also helping the staff so that the hospital can run more smoothly.

Career

I will apply my skills from previous work and volunteer experience to my future career. For work experience, I spent two summer working as a counselor at a day camp for a group of 20 five year olds. Last summer I worked at a day care with children of the age of two and three. This year I am volunteering at Grant Medical Center, a local hospital here in Columbus. All of these experiences will help me in my future career because I plan to work in a hospital and work with young children or infants. I know how to work with children from many years of experience and my year of service project has allowed me to gain knowledge on how a hospital environment feels and generally works.

My artifact is a picture of one of my campers and I. This past summer, I worked as a camp counselor for the five year olds at my temple, Solon Chabad. It was such a meaningful experience, because I was able to experience working with young children, which is my main academic interest. I am planning on majoring in early childhood education, because I want to spend my life building relationships and impacting young children’s lives. In the summer, I was able to get a feel for doing so, and the outcome was more than inspiring. I gained a love for the children I looked after for eight weeks, and I had a desire to teach them how to be the best people they could be. Throughout my experience, I learned that disciplining young children is not a simple task. While many teachers believe punishment is the right way to discipline a child, it is not necessarily the best way in approaching the situation. I’ve learned that the best way to discipline a child is through Conscious discipline. Conscious discipline is a shift from an obedient model of discipline, to a relationship-based model of discipline, which will have a more positive outcome on the students’ school experience as well as the teacher’s. I would love to become a preschool teacher in order to integrate this method into the classroom.

About Me

FullSizeRender-8My name is Hannah Lee and I am from Cleveland, OH. I am a 2016 graduate of Hawken School and currently a first year at The Ohio State University in the Mount Leadership scholars program. As a person, I find happiness in creating friendships and helping others. As a student, I consider myself a hard worker and motivated. I am currently an early childhood education major interested in teaching and/or working with preschool/kindergarten children, but I am also looking into social work and speech therapy. I am also interested in minoring in psychology and dance. I’ve been a competitive dancer since I’ve been five years old, and through this experience I’ve learned about responsibility and leadership and have created everlasting relationships and memories. In my high school, many of my meaningful experiences took place in the Chorale as well as the A-cappella group. I am hoping to continue my dancing and singing career in college through various student run organizations.
