She received her PhD degree in statistics from University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2002, working with Grace Wahba and Yi Lin. She joined the statistics faculty in 2002 and has a courtesy appointment in Computer Science and Engineering since 2016. She was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2015 and served as a faculty co-director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute at Ohio State from 2020–2022.

Her research interests are statistical learning and multivariate analysis with a specific focus on classification, ranking, dimensionality reduction, and kernel methods. She is interested in problems at the intersection of statistics and machine learning. Her recent focus is on developing a methodology for modeling latent structures in multivariate data and a computational and inferential framework for understanding model stability and complexity in predictive settings. Her research has been funded by the NSF and NSA.

She has served the profession through various roles. She is an Associate Editor of Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, Econometrics and Statistics, Journal of the Korean Statistical Society, and Statistical Analysis and Data Mining. She is also an Editorial Board Reviewer of Journal of Machine Learning Research since 2020.
