Bringing Authenticity to Online Teaching and Learning

Elevating the Online Learning Experience through Engagement, Ownership, and Collaboration

Ana-Paula Correia

An online learning experience for graduate students in a newly created online master’s in learning technologies is the core of this descriptive study. It showcases how learner-centered design, innovative and entrepreneurial thinking is brought into graduate education. “Applied Learning Design,” an online graduate course that has been evolved into a comprehensive online learning experience is the context for this study. The problem arises from the fact that many programs in higher education are focused more on the transmission and replication of knowledge than on providing opportunities for learning in real-world application contexts.

This study uses a mixed-methods approach to investigate the design of online learning experiences that promote engagement, ownership, and collaboration when students apply their instructional design knowledge and skills to real-world projects.
