Nomophobia and Lifestyle: Smartphone Use and its Relationship to Psychopathologies

Ana-Paula Correia

In recent years, smartphones have become an essential part of daily life due to their ability to provide instant information and communication. However, excessive smartphone use, known as nomophobia, can lead to negative consequences. This study explores the relationship between nomophobia and the lifestyles and psychopathologies of Portuguese young adults aged 18-24. A sample of 495 participants was surveyed using the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and the FANTASTIC Lifestyle questionnaire. Results showed a moderate correlation between nomophobia and psychopathological symptoms, particularly interpersonal sensitivity and obsession-compulsion. Excessive smartphone use and feelings of personal inadequacy were significant factors contributing to nomophobia. Education, strong relationships, and physical activity were found to be protective factors against nomophobia. The study emphasizes the need for understanding and addressing nomophobia’s impact on mental health and well-being in today’s digital age.
