Hello, welcome to my E-portfolio. My name is Jacob Lay and this is were I’ll share some of my experiences as a scholars student at The Ohio State University.
Month: September 2017
Year in Review
I have evolved in two major ways. The first is that I have become more involved in many different areas. I have joined a few clubs and have completed volunteering. One of the great things about being in Biological Sciences Scholars is that there’s always volunteering options being presented to you that might otherwise be difficult to find on your own. Personally I have volunteered on the Community Commitment day and for volunteer projects held by members of the Scholars program. I have also become a much better student in the ways that I study. Like many people in Honors and Scholars I didn’t have to study much in high school to succeed. I have had to completely change how I study and also be more disciplined with myself in order to study appropriately for tests and exams now that I’m in college. Both of these changes have definitely been for the better and ill hopefully aid me in my future Successes at Ohio State.
G.O.A.L.S.
Global Awareness: It is always important to broaden the horizon of our perspective to the global level. This includes studying abroad to fully experience another culture. As well as Going on service trips to help people in other countries or even just raising money for people in need.
Original Inquiry: The post likely way I’ll do an Originally inquiry as a Health Sciences Major would be through working on research. The Ohio State University is full of ground breaking research that I am currently looking to be apart of I hope to be working in a research lab by the summer at the latest.
Academic Enrichment: I chose my Major of Health Science to prepare me for Medical School in the future. There are classes that I will need to take in order to be ready for Medical school. I will achieve this is through consistent and disciplined studying and work of these classes.
Leadership Development: Leadership Development is something that is important for working as a team in future medical settings. I am looking to develop my leadership skills through volunteering and the various clubs that I am or will be apart of while at OSU. This type of experience is not something that you can usually just get immediately so it will require constant work.
Service Engagement: The Biological Sciences Scholars program requires 10 hours of volunteering per semester, so that gets me off to a good start for Service engagement. There are also a few volunteering commitments I made for organizations such as Peletonia in high school that I intend to keep in college. I would also like to find some kind of medical setting volunteering that I can regularly do so that I can gain experience while also giving back.
Career
Here is my Resume, as a freshman I haven’t been able to get too involved in research and general medical experience, but I am in the process of changing that. I had a a science heavy high school curriculum with a multitude of Advanced Placement classes. On campus I have gotten involved with a few new clubs, while still intending to stay apart of previous commitments such a Peletonia fund raising for cancer research. As my science skills grow here at OSU I hope to find somewhere where I can put them to work in a laboratory environment. Jacob Lay Biological Sciences Scholars Resume-2ee2uxb
Community Commitement
Every year on the first weekend on campus there is an event called Community Commitment where thousands of students are sent out to various locations throughout Columbus to volunteer for a multitude of organizations and causes. First they split us off and talked to us about recycling on campus, I was vary surprised to find out that a lot of the things that I would naturally assume would be recyclable are not. Then me and a few other Bio Sci Scholars picked up trash on few of the streets east of campus. The streets and sidewalks were littered with trash, especially beer cans and bottles, as there had been a number of parties in that area the night before. I was very surprised from the sheer amount of litter that was produced.
About Me
Hello, my name is Jacob Lay. I graduated from New Albany High School, about 25 minutes from campus, in 2017, where I did shot put and discus for four years. Now I am majoring in Health Sciences and want to go to graduate school after four years at The Ohio State University. I have always wanted to be a doctor, and after two years at THE Ohio State University I think I want to pursue a career in research. I hope to get a better and more fine tuned understanding of what exactly I want to do get involved with after graduation in the coming two years.
