Lunch will be providedJoin us for the first ever HBCU Law Day at Ohio State!  This Friday at Curl Hall (Viewpoint room on the 2nd floor) we will be hosting a symposium from 9am-4pm featuring law school representatives and alumni as we explore the unique role the six Historically Black College and University law schools* have in our country.  At a time when DEI initiatives are being scaled back, what does it mean to attend an HBCU?  Learn from (and network with) judges, attorneys, and other guest speakers about the unique role of these law schools, their perspectives regarding legal education, and their insights into the profession today.

Our Keynote Speaker is the Honorable Laurel Beatty Blunt, Judge with the Tenth District Court of Appeals for the State of Ohio.  Other speakers include:

In addition to speaker and panel sessions the HBCU Law Day will include student-led discussion groups and a table fair/networking reception.  This free event is open to anyone in the Ohio State community – whether you’re considering a legal career or have an interest in HBCUs generally we encourage all interested students to participate (if you have classes on Friday be sure to let your instructors know about this professional development opportunity).  Pre-registration via the Handshake platform is strongly recommended to help us plan for lunch but is not required.  Students who pre-register will have a printed name tag when they check in.

*The six HBCU law schools are University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, Florida A&M University College of Law, Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., North Carolina Central University School of Law, Southern University Law Center in Louisiana, and Thurgood Marshall Law School at Texas Southern University.

Be sure to check the Pre-Professional website for events and calendar dates
Several pre-law programs and events are in the works for Autumn semester – check the Pre-Professional Calendar to stay updated.  Regular workshops will include…

Pre-Law 100 – “Pre-Law Resources at Ohio State”  Offered as First Year Success Series (FYSS).  Covers pre-law resources at Ohio State and begins the process of exploring why you’re considering law school and if it’s the right path for you.  Go to the FYSS website and search for Pre-Law.  Registration is required, either in advance or at the session.

Pre-Law 101 – “Law School Admissions and Timeline”  Explores the process and preparation for applying to law school, including goals and steps to take each year, an overview of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) and the LSAT, the components of the application, and related topics.
Pre-Law 202 – “A Dog, A Trespasser, and the Oxford comma: Reading for Law School”  Offered as a STEP Professional Development Co-Curricular (PDC).  Law is nothing if not reading – think you can catch everything in a phrase or know when words are signaling important concepts?  This is an interactive workshop focusing on what it means to read for detail using the socratic method, an improbable fact pattern, and a touch of absurdist humor.

Pre-registering is always recommended but not always required – each workshop will have a link provided once locations and other details are finalized.
