[10/30/2015] Dr. Ayanna Brown’s talk on, “Conceptualizing Racial Literacies as the Academic Means to a Social End”

LES announcement Ayanna Brown-page-001

Dr. Brown presents racial literacies in three contexts: (1) conceptually, (2) pedagogically, and (3) methodologically in order to advance an existing framework of racial literacy presently situated in socialization and conflict resolution.  Of particular focus for this talk are the pedagogical investments made in classrooms to develop racial literacies with varying racial and regional demographics.  Video data of academic work will be used to discuss the academic means to a social end of dysconciousness that is presently not visible in explicit curriculum in K-12 education.  The presentation concludes with considerations for working with K-12 teachers in constructing dialogue rich classroom spaces where race and racism are discussed academically, intertextually, and personally.
