Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Hello and welcome to my e-Portfolio! My name is Megan Landis and I am a member of the STEM EE Scholars program. I am currently a first year student at The Ohio State University as an Atmospheric Science major. In this portfolio you will find several details about my first year in college and all the adventures and lessons I learned and took part of. As for my future, I am currently interested in working for the National Weather Service as a weather forecaster but I am open to other career opportunities my major exposes me to. I am excited for the next four years of my life to see how I grow and change throughout my college experience.

About Me

12087064_1215449778481366_4716108287194288284_o

My name is Megan Landis. I was born and raised just outside of Columbus in Grove City, Ohio. I was lucky to live in such a good community where I always had close friends and family nearby. I always excelled in school, however I was never identified as gifted until middle school. My parents always encouraged me to do my best in school, and I always pushed myself to be the best. Neither of my parents or any of my siblings went to college, so I always planned on attending The Ohio State University. I never really cared for science in school until I learned about weather, and that is what drove me toward a STEM major.

I never was exposed to STEM in grade school. I did not understand what it was until I read about it while applying for the scholars program. I liked the ideas behind it and I am a science major, so I decided to put STEM at the top of my preferred scholars programs list. I hope I will start to feel more at ease with the other components of STEM, but I am sure I will be able to succeed in the program.

My freshman year of high school was a big year for me when it came to deciding what I wanted to study in college. I took a class called Business Foundations, and during the winter of my freshman year I had to pick someone to job shadow. I reached out to local meteorologist Bill Kelly of Fox 28 News and I was able to shadow him one night during one of the broadcasts. I had always been interested in weather, but shadowing a real meteorologist was fascinating. I loved how he felt that he was really helping people by getting the predictions right, I could tell he really loved his job. I was so interested in how he could use the computer to show several models of the same weather pattern and use his own knowledge to fuse them together and create an accurate forecast. After that experience, I knew I wanted to pursue meteorology as my career.

Knowing that I wanted to become a meteorologist led me on the search for the right college. While I had always wanted to attend The Ohio State University, I did try to look for other options just in case I would not be accepted. I searched and searched only to be at a loss, my major was very specific and very few colleges in the nation, let alone Ohio, offered it. It then came time to apply for college, I only applied to OSU and I prayed that I would get in because I had no backup plan. On a crisp fall night I discovered I had been admitted and I called my mom and I cried because I was so proud, everything I had done over the past four years in high school had paid off. I now attend the university that brings me so much joy, and I cannot wait to see what else Ohio State has in store for me.
