For one of my classes during the fall semester of my Sophomore year, I had to volunteer at the East Broad Street Food Pantry. At first, I was nervous about this experience since I had to spend 30 hours there during that semester. In addition, I had to take a bus about 40 minutes off campus to get to the location. However, I got comfortable quickly. I built relationships with other volunteers and the staff at the pantry. I also strengthened relationships with fellow Mount Scholars. I gained valuable insight into running a food pantry. I also witnessed poverty. This is something I never truly saw given the neighborhoods I lived in. This was a valuable experience in that it taught me things that I couldn’t necessarily learn in a classroom.

Equipment Manager Position at The Ohio State University
Over the past winter (February 2019), I had the opportunity to work with the Ohio State football team as an equipment manager. I helped the other managers set up drills and tear them down. We also did laundry and organize the players’ and coaches’ gear. It may not seem to be the most appealing job to some but i enjoyed every minute that I got to spend volunteering with the team. It made me further realize the importance football has in my life and how much I miss playing it. It taught me the importance of teamwork and communication, both of which are very important in any workplace. Through the volunteering opportunity, I met great people and I was able to see what it is like behind the scenes of a football team. I am leaning towards a career in the sports industry either as a coach or a front office worker, so this was an invaluble experience. I hope to continue with next year and hopefully become a full time manager.
Artifacts: National Latin Exam
As a Latin student at Walsh Jesuit High School, we were required to participate in the National Latin exam in Latin I and Latin II. In both years, I was commended for my performance on the exam. On the Latin I exam, I received a cum laude certficate. On the Latin II exam, I received a maxima cum laude certificate and a silver place medal. I spent much time studying for the exams. Some of my fellow classmates did not on the other hand since it was not taken for a grade. I enjoyed Latin and I wanted to succeed. My classmates looked up to me in Latin; I did not want to let them down on this exam. I worked hard to study for the exam and it paid off in the end. I did not have to take the final exam for the class since I did so well on the National Latin Exam. It helped to show me that working hard is very important. My success with the exams established a great amount of confidence for me going forward in Latin and my other classes.
Artifacts: Campion Society
Based on the results of my entrance exam for Walsh Jesuit, I was inducted into the Campion Society. This was because I scored in the top 2% nationally on the test. Going into high school was a very nerve wrenching moment. This made me more confident in my knowledge and my ability to perform well at school. It also was my last achievement that I gained during grade school. It really was the epitome of all the hard work I put into school up to that point of my life. I worked hard and it payed off. It helped to show me the importance of hard work. It gave me some momentum going into high school. The award was given to me by Walsh Jesuit. If I chose to go to Walsh (which I did), I would be given benefits that other students would not receive. One such advantage was being able to take honors courses my freshman year. This provided me with a rigorous schedule that has prepared me well for college.
