G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: As an student who is majoring in International Studies and minoring in Spanish, broadening my global awareness is vital. Within my time at OSU, I hope to travel to and study in at least two countries, one of them being Spain. Not only do I hope to gain more understanding about the world and expand my knowledge of other cultures, such as learning Spanish through immersion, but also to look into possible professions, research, and further educational opportunities in these countries
  • Original Inquiry: Compounded with studying abroad, I wish to capitalize on the ability to research on an international level rather than just within one nation. Internships for supranational organizations (like the United Nations or Human Rights Watch), preferably in upcoming summers, will greatly help me achieve this goal of furthering my understanding of the international system, politics, and law. I also hope to learn more about the application of Peace Studies in reference to diplomacy.
  • Academic Enrichment: To stretch past my specialization in International Relations and Diplomacy, my personal goal is to develop my breadth of knowledge in a myriad of fields beyond International Relations and use other approaches in my potential career. For example, by taking Psychology this semester, I am better able to understand the fundamentals of human behavior and decision-making, which can definitely be applied to any career and any course of study.
  • Leadership Development: As a student who is active in organizations around campus, such as Mock Trial, I aspire to develop my leadership skills within a close-knit group of students. Beyond helping my fellow teammates with their materials and competing across the nation, I intend to be more involved in the planning and logistical aspects for the team, like finance or tournament planning. I am also very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a leader among high school students in the Columbus area.
  • Service Engagement: In reference to the aforementioned leadership experience, I am also a Speech and Debate coach at Gahanna Lincoln High School in Gahanna, Ohio. The feeling is beyond rewarding to help students craft speeches involving various literature and debate cases for current issues and topics in which they are truly passionate. Along with coaching, I anticipate engaging in more local volunteer opportunities within my community.

About Me

Welcome!

Hello! My name is Adesh Vinod Labhasetwar. I am a second-year at the Ohio State University triple majoring in Business (with a specialization in Economics), International Relations and Diplomacy, and Spanish. I am from Solon, Ohio where I participated in numerous communication and advocacy-based clubs that sparked my passion in law and politics.

In high school, I was heavily involved in the Speech and Debate and Mock Trial programs. These activities provided me with a foundation for communication, argumentation, and critical thinking that I apply to several other aspects of my life. My passion for international politics started when I was debating solutions to topical global issues, such as the Syrian refugee crisis and the merits of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. I was able to employ my argumentation skills in front of my peers at quarterly debates between the Young Democrats and Young Conservative clubs. Furthermore, Mock Trial coupled with my background as a first-generation immigrant sparked my interest in law and representing marginalized voices. I am now the Tournament Director of Mock Trial at Ohio State where I have the responsibility of planning two tournaments to host teams across the nation in Columbus. I am in charge of keeping in contact with these teams, preparing our competition site (the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas), and recruiting attorneys to serve as judges.

I also appreciate the educational value of such academic clubs. I am currently an assistant Speech and Debate coach at Gahanna Lincoln High School where I analyze various literature to help students compose programs of oral interpretation and facilitate practice debates with students to critique argumentation and impromptu speaking. I am especially thankful for this opportunity as it allows me to maintain a creative element in my life of reading art and acting while also fueling the passions of my students. Seeing them proud of their work is an accomplishment for me in and of itself.

In the future, I hope to pursue a career in Immigration or International Law as well as draft diplomatic or financial agreements with countries in Latin America. When I am not preoccupied with class and extracurricular activities, I love to write, watch Netflix, and run.
