Artifacts

Music– Music is something that has always been really important in my life. I grew surround by music and when I was younger learned to play many different instruments.  Around middle school I beganIMAG0131 to play the clarinet and it really stuck. Over the years I practiced a lot and worked to be the best I could be. I was really lucky that my high school had really outstanding marching and concert band programs. I feel that music has given me a creative outlet, but is also something that requires discipline and hard work.  There are many benefits that come from being involved with music other than being able to play an instrument.   Before starting at OSU I realized that the marching band does not have woodwind instruments, not wanting to end that part of my life I picked up cymbals for the first time and began to learn to play them.  I now love cymbals and hope to continue to play them throughout my time at Ohio State.

Outreach– All my life I have always really liked kids and educating, but knew that it was not theIMAG1097 right career path for me. I began to find different opportunities to reach out to kids and get them involved in some of the things that I really enjoy.  Since starting at Ohio State I have found many opportunities to continue to do outreach, but have specifically settled on one. Through Society of Women Engineers (SWE) if have begun to volunteer my time at Ridgeway Middle School’s STEM Club, teaching the students about the design process and doing activities with them that focus on different types of engineering disciplines.  It’s so interesting to see the different designs that they come up with and to see them solve the problems that they come across.  I hope to continue with this, and find ways to do outreach throughout my time at OSU and throughout my career.

About Me

Hey my name is Emily and I’m an incoming freshman here at THE Ohio State University. I’m planning on majoring in Integrated Systems Engineering.  I’m super pumped to now being living on campus and begin classes and leave tdownload_20150512_210301 (1)he fond memories of high school behind.

I grew up all around Columbus but settled in Dublin, Ohio right before I started elementary school. Growing up around Columbus I was always surrounded by a LOVE for the Buckeyes and the university. I recently opened a letter to myself that I wrote in middle school that detailed how much love I had for the Bucks and how much I wanted to attend this university. Throughout high school I was very involved with the marching band and obtained many leadership positions, and not to brag but we were ranked 31st in the nation and rising. I was also very involved with volunteering in my community though Coffman, and the Girl Scouts. I was also a volunteer at COSI and had a ton of fun making friends and being around people who had a deep love of science. In school I took on the challenge of the IB (International Baccalaureate) Programme. Through this program I took on two years of rigorous courses, CAS (Community Action Service), Theory of Knowledge, and writing a lengthy research paper. My paper was about how being involved in an arts, more specifically music program, makes kids do better in school. I was able to prove this through my research, which I thought was really awesome. I feel that being a part of an alternative leaning program really helped me make the transition into college because of the level of responsibility they put on us to take care of our own learning and making it about something we each individually cared about. I’m super stoked to continue to further my education in areas that I’m passionate about here at Ohio State.
