Health and Wellness for OSU students
By Delaney Lawler
COVID-19 has been a tough year for all of us. Everything and how we know the world has been changed. Travel, shopping, education have been affected forever and for the foreseeable future will need time before returning to how we knew it.
The Ohio State University prides itself on trying to be one of the healthiest universities in the country and while most people pre-COVID would have only thought of that in a physical aspect, mental health is more important now than ever. Heartfelt yoga studio is one of the companies that has worked with OSU in the past and taught classes on large outdoor spaces.
Think about how you can take care of yourself by exploring new places, trying a new activity, or even just taking some time for yourself when the world all seems to be zooming around you.

How Yoga Benefits You
Yoga is an ancient mind and body practice that many people still embrace today. I have practiced yoga a few times and it makes me feel peaceful and healthy, but I haven’t continuously practiced it over a long period of time. I wanted to look into the proven health benefits from continuously practicing yoga.
A few proven benefits include:
- Increased flexibility
- Help manage stress
- Improved energy
- Increased muscle strength
- Maintain a balanced metabolism
- Protection from injury
The next time you think about working out, give yoga a try. I know I will.

Yoga Studio Emphasizes Community and Inclusivity as Key to Comfort
Heartfelt Yoga Studio aims to provide a safe space for people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and lifestyles. The inclusivity can be found in the studio’s artwork – persons of varying shapes and colors – to its diverse staff of 15 members.
Instructor Ivory Levert says the studio’s focus on community and inclusivity is a key in building a person’s comfort level with fitness that can last a lifetime: “When people see our staff, instructors that look like them, there is a level of comfort that maybe they can do this, too.”
In-person and virtual yoga sessions are offered in a range of Yoga disciplines and comfort and ability levels.

India Brings Classical Yoga
In today’s post, I want to focus on the roots of yoga and where it originated. The practice is considered ancient and the first known mention of the word “yoga” was found in the sacred text Rig Veda. Depictions of the meditation practice can be seen in hieroglyphics, figures posing in yoga poses.
Yoga was documented by Rishis (sages) who spread the practice of yoga and helped develop the practice into the many different versions we see today. The United States did not become involved in yoga practice until the 1890s, where a single person introduced the country to the practice at a fair.
