G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

To grow my global awareness, I plan to complete additional coursework beyond the general education requirements in departments that help foster engaging thought and discussion regarding different global cultures. As a first year student, I am taking a Translation Studies course through the Comparative Studies department. I have learned many concepts on the global nature of our society today and the resulting impacts on language, culture, and translation. In addition, I am considering completing a study abroad experience while I am at Ohio State. I am interested in visiting a Spanish speaking country, where I can use (and further develop) my current language skills.

Original Inquiry:

In order to increase opportunities for original inquiry, I plan to complete undergraduate research, with the support of a faculty member, during my junior or senior year at Ohio State. In addition, I will use the many resources provided by Ohio State to network and build relationships with faculty members, as well as find internships or REUs for the summer months. My current coursework is also helping to develop my research skills and providing opportunities for in-class scholarly endeavors. In Physics 1250H, I often have to create my own experiment in order to solve a question given by the instructor. I then must reflect on my decisions as well as the outcome of the experiment. I believe this course provides a significant introduction to the research process in an insightful and alternative manner that will help me when I complete a formal research inquiry.

Academic Enrichment:

I chose to study mathematics with a minor in either computational science or computer science not only because I find the content extremely interesting and engaging, but also because I believe the skills that I will develop through this degree program are integral to many jobs and career paths. Due to the increasing reliance on technology, every company and business is in need of individuals who can effectively translate between the physical applications and the modeling and data. To complement my primarily math and science course load and further foster academic enrichment, I chose to take a Translation Studies course as the GE Cultures and Ideas requirement for my first semester. It is an insightful class that provides opportunities for deep discussion and thought regarding the nature of our global society, as well as the balance between culture and language—topics not usually discussed in mathematics or science.

Leadership Development:

I am a student-athlete on the cross country and track and field teams at Ohio State. This honor will provide me with plenty of opportunities to develop both my communication and leadership skills as I work alongside my teammates. I am also a member of the Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter, where I plan to hold a formal leadership position. In general, I believe my leadership style is best characterized as leading by example with supplemental guidance if needed.

Service Engagement:

I believe community service and volunteer work is integral to the education process in college, as well as life fulfillment for young adults during their years at college. Service engagement encourages reflection and insight through the exposure to social issues within their community. I am a member of the Circle K Club at Ohio State, which is a chapter of Circle K International, that promotes service, leadership, and fellowship through community volunteer activities and leadership opportunities. For example, the Circle K Club at Ohio State works closely with the Franklin County Animal Shelter as well as local youth shelters to provide fundraising and assistance.
