The summary for my three takeaways

Learning Styles

I found the article, “Learning Styles The Models, Myths and Misconceptions – and What They Mean for Your Learning”

The “learning style” theory attempted to define people by learning methods based on individual strengths, individual preferences, and other factors such as motivation and a favorable learning environment. Many different learning style models have been developed, but even the most popular models are now questioned. The main criticism is that they are unscientific, inflexible, and in fact ineffective.

Pomodoro Technique

I found the Pomodoro Technique outlined in 6 Time Management Tips for Online Students (Landry, 2018) is really effective.

It was invented in the early 1990s by Italian entrepreneur and writer Francesco Cirillo. “Pomodoro” is the Italian word for “tomato”, which comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used to love when he was a student.

The Pomodoro technique method is to repeat short tasks and short breaks. Specifically, “25 minutes work + 5 minutes break” is set as 1 pomodoro, and a 30-minute break is taken every 4 pomodoros (2 hours). Repeat this.
It is important not only to keep your work time short but also to try to complete the tasks assigned within one Pomodoro. That leads to concentration. Concentration can make you tired, but frequent breaks can help you recover, and your concentration will increase intermittently throughout the day, resulting in increased productivity.

I’m always studying without a break, and sometimes I lose my concentration and take too long to finish a task. So this method was effective for me and I would like to continue.

Taking notes and studying

ABBREVIATIONS

Using abbreviations and symbols is the best way to do it quickly and accurately when you think it’s important and write down the points in your notebook. You can omit it as you study, and since it is your own notebook, you can create it yourself.
I tend to forget what I’ve omitted in a few days, so I use abbreviations to take notes during class and rewrite them in my notebook the same day without omitting them.

Here are some ways to help you quickly write down what the professor said during class in your notebook:

Common types of abbreviations are

  • acronyms (e.g., CBA = cost-benefit analysis),
  • first letters (e.g., P = psychology),
  • shortened words (e.g., reg = registration),
  • words with reduced vowels (e.g., explntn), and
  • symbols as abbreviations (e.g, -> = leads to).

NOTE-TAKING MODELS

Cornell method

The Cornell method uses five steps in the note-taking process to make it easier to retain information. Participate in the learning process using recording notes, creating questionsrecitationreflection, and review.

In the Cornell method, the output work establishes knowledge. The “Cornell Method” is to make notes for review.
