As a member of the Honors College of Arts and Sciences, I will engage in global awareness in a variety of different ways. As a bilingual student, I plan on adding a Russian minor to further my formal knowledge of the language and culture. This will allow me to have an even greater expertise in the language. I am currently enrolled in Slavic 2367: The East European Immigrant Experience in America. This class is an eye-opening outlook on the lives of immigrants and how global diversity is shaped in America. During my four years I also plan on completing a study abroad program either in the form of a summer semester or internship experience. There are a variety of different incredible programs such as a chance to travel to Norway to work in a genetics laboratory for my major. I believe that travel is the best way to develop a global perspective.
As a prospective molecular genetics and nutrition double major, the research process is of upmost importance to me. I plan on experiences original inquiry through the form of working in a research lab. I have always sought research experiences, whether through science fair projects or individual research. I plan on utilizing the resource of attending a top tier research university by applying to multiple research labs. The chance to contribute to the amazing work faculty is doing and pursue my own original research on the overlap between nutrition and genetics is what I will focus on.
My commitment to academic enrichment is seen by the rigorous challenge of a double major and a minor. Although this will not be an easy feat, I believe that each aspect is important to my future. Genetics is always something that has always excited me. By taking an introduction nutrition class, it awakened the fact that for the overall health of our population, taking care of proper nutrition will lead to the prevention of many awful conditions. I hope to one day work on further developing the links between epigenetics and nutrition to aid in world wide healthcare measures. A minor in Russian will help me further understand cultural diversity.
Leadership development is an important strategy to learn how to effectively work with others. I am currently involved with the Russian Students Association, molecular genetics club, self defense club, and Chabad. Each of these clubs allows me the opportunity to apply and experience leadership positions where I will learn the way to be a organized and efficient leader.
Service engagement is very important to me. I plan on joining service organizations that help the underprivileged receive healthcare services they are lacking. I also plan to continue my many years of service specialized in mentoring children with special needs. Whether this is through joining an already established program, or creating my own, service will be a big focus of my undergraduate experience.
