G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness: During my time here at Ohio State, I intend to study abroad in order to immerse myself in a new culture that can offer a different perspective on what I am learning. I am interested in the Global May programs, and studying at a foreign university would be an ideal way to meet new people and truly partake in a new lifestyle. On campus, I have already taken some classes that have taught me about the diversity of our world, such as Anthropology, and I am excited to take more classes that focus on the world at large.

Original Inquiry: To participate in creative projects or research, I plan on joining a research lab on campus with a faculty member during my second year. I have also been looking at summer research internships for P&G in Cincinnati. I am very interested in clinical research, as well as research regarding the effects of human activity on the environment. I am deciding on a minor to pursue in my fourth year of study, and I am attracted to programs that require laboratory work or field work. My major (Biology) also requires laboratory work in the classroom, which encompasses an ongoing process of creative thinking to solve problems.

Academic Enrichment: In my four-year academic plan, I have chosen elective courses in the Biology major that align with my interests in medicine and the environment. For example, I intend to take a classes concerning microbial pathogens and Immunobiology, conservation biology, the biology of pollution, parasites and evolution, and comparative vertebrate anatomy. I am also considering the Pharmaceutical sciences minor, which can enhance my clinical understanding. I am excited to take the interdisciplinary course—the history of HIV—because it is a cross between the microbiology behind HIV, as well as its historical significance. I am still considering how I want to specialize within Biology, so I plan on taking a mix of EEOB and Microbiology courses to discover more about certain disciplines. My academic plan also demonstrates how I will take more credit hours than the minimum requirement.

Leadership Development: So far, I have joined UHA Columbus as a member of the Community Outreach committee. In this student organization that has the mission to make healthcare more accessible to the Columbus community, my job is to research what population of Columbus is in greatest need of health care, and I must network with local businesses and organizations to provide more services at our free health screenings. Additionally, I have applied to a volunteering internship to become a mentor/tutor for students with disabilities. This winter, I will also apply to summer internships of biological sciences or public health focuses. During the summer, I am a gymnastics instructor for children, and I am passionate about being a role model for kids.

Service Engagement: During my first semester at Ohio State, I have volunteered at the UHA Columbus second annual free health screening, and I have also helped out at fundraising events held by UHA Columbus. If I receive the volunteering internship I mentioned earlier, I will have a weekly commitment to help students with disabilities over the spring term. Furthermore, I am currently in the interview process for a volunteer position at the James Cancer Hospital. This position requires a minimum of two hours of service per week, and I hope to provide assistance to patients and their families.

UHA Columbus

I am excited to have recently joined UHA Columbus, which is a non-profit student organization here on campus. This organization has the mission to improve universal health through preventive medicine, health education, and leadership development.

My Calling

My name is Tess, and I am from Milford, Ohio (think Cincinnati). I chose The Ohio State University because of the Honors program and endless opportunities pertinent to my intended major and focus– biology and pre-medicine. My dream is to become a surgeon, and in high school I attended a National Student Leadership Conference in medicine at Northwestern University to explore different careers. At Milford High School, I was involved in student council, National Honor Society, DECA, writing center, varsity lacrosse, class office, and Buckeye Girls State. I am a gymnastics teacher for kids, and I find validation in helping others learn and grow. I channeled this calling through the development of ACT Crash Course, so that my peers could have free advice and tips in order to improve their standardized test scores. In high school, my favorite classes included calculus, statistics, psychology, physics, and biology. However, I do love to engage in discussion and seminars, so AP Literature was a surprising favorite of my senior year. My hobbies include tumbling, skiing/snowboarding, watching pretty much any documentary on Netflix, and reading. At Ohio State, I hope to embrace every moment, lesson, and person that I encounter to learn and to grow myself.
