Campus Observation Drawings

Combined Drawing of Dodridge Street and Garden of Constants by Oxley’s

Project Statement

When engaging with a subject, it should inspire motivation and activity. I was inspired by one night I slept with my windows open and realized the business of the street on which I live. I couldn’t sleep from all the cars, as there was just a sense of energy that made me feel restless. When choosing my angle for the drawing of Dodridge Street, I sought a way to showcase the most amount of energy being generated. I used the “No Parking” sign as my viewpoint and I found aesthetically engaging how the lines naturally led to it. I found that this provided movement for an energetic piece. For the other subject that inspires comfort and safety, I choose the Garden of Constants by Oxley’s and the Tuttle Parking Garage. The numbers are one of my favorite locations on campus, and I love to sit there and do homework. I find the colors calming and the curved lines are soothing. I chose the angle with the building and a parking garage behind it because I appreciated how the straight lines of the classroom building and the parking garage contrast with the oval nature of the zero and the round platform around it.

Reflection

When it came to the drawing I enjoyed crafting the basic shapes and felt like I successfully did so. My biggest challenge is shading, especially in black and white. Personally, I find it very difficult to find the right tone to use and that ended up making it look slightly off. Overall I enjoyed this project, I felt that after each iteration I improved on my drawing skills that will continue to grow.
