Finished Bike Flag

Here is the final product of my bike part “flag”. As mentioned before this is using the term flag as more of a symbol of something, a representation of sorts, and not that of a traditional fabric flag. The concept is that with quarantine, more and more people are getting out on their bikes when it is nice out. The trails are flooded with people and it almost makes riding on the street safer. Regardless, there is a return to bike culture and a resurgence in cycling exploration due to the fact that a lot of people now have more free time. The flag is made from one hundred percent bike parts and no external fasteners were used. I guess in inadvertently I only used 2 materials, metal and rubber, to make the whole work.

Started to make the flag

So I started to make the flag previously mentioned, and found out that I will be needing more chain to complete the build. The cable itself is holding very well without any extra support.

Finally have an idea for my project!

Since we aren’t allowed in the wood shop to use the equipment, I have been pretty lost in this project. I almost had finalized my design and was ready to get making after spring break. It left me a little discouraged for quite a while trying to come up with a new project. When Deb recommended the art flag project I was interested but again was having trouble coming up with any ideas. When Deb and Mary Anne posted their flags on Instagram, it got me thinking a little more about what I could do, sometimes an example jump starts my creative process. Yesterday it was so nice out and there were so many people on the bike path riding their bikes, so this got me thinking “could I make a flag about bikes?”. My answer to that is yes. I have a bunch of old bike parts that I can piece together to make a flag like object. This will most likely include an old wheel, some chain, bike cabling, old tubes and other things I can manage to find. I will be posting a sketch in my next post.
