Year in Review

During my freshman year of college, I evolved as a student, an athlete, and a brother. Academically, I struggled to adjust to the academic rigor during the first semester, especially with time management skills and understanding complex topics, but the courses I took shaped me into a more responsible and stronger student. Away from home, the first semester was especially difficult because I had to balance academics, social life, squash and fitness, and flying, all while living completely independent. The transition was challenging at times, but these challenges shaped me into a more hardworking and thankful man. The highlights of my first semester were definitely befriending HES Peers, passing my Private Pilot test (while I was infected with Mononucleosis), and competing with OSU’s squash club and the Capital Club in Columbus. The 2nd semester also presented unique challenges, especially with COVID-19. When I departed Columbus for Spring Break, I didn’t realize the severity of the global pandemic until the first colleges started to suspend classes. Once OSU canceled the remainder of the semester, I felt devastated. I had so many fun events planned and was looking forward to finishing the semester strong with my fellow classmates and friends. Coronavirus has uprooted my lifestyle and impacted my life, but has also given me perspective. I’ve become more thankful for my parents, who are doctors continuing to serve our community and risk their lives each day treating patients, my close friends, who I never truly appreciated until I couldn’t physically see them, and my own health. The situation is frustrating at times, but I’m thankful for my good health during these times and that my family is financially secure. It’s terrible to hear how companies are laying off their workforces indefinitely, leaving some families with no source of income. During these uncertain times, I’ve spent time reflecting on the past year, and I’m especially thankful for the opportunity to attend OSU and meet such impactful students and faculty. Being reserved, I’m also proud that I networked with US airlines and learned more about future career opportunities throughout the year. When the time is right, I’m excited to return to OSU, continue my education, and grow with my friends and HES peers.

Columbus To-do list

On Tuesday, November 5th, our peer mentor group went to Kafe Kerouac, which is located on north High Street. It can best be described as a small and peaceful coffee shop with a few couches, tables, and comfy seats. It’s very warm inside and has a very homey feel to it. When we went, there were quite a few OSU students studying there while enjoying warm drinks and breakfast foods and snacks. Personally, I enjoyed how quiet and homey the place felt. As soon as I walked in, I felt very relieved and relaxed. I would recommend this place to a friend if they ever want a different place to study that isn’t too far away from campus. I learned that it’s important to explore the area, because there are probably many off the map places that you may like. I plan on studying in this place in the future. In the picture below, you can see the counter in the background, as well as some bookshelves and paintings.

Artifacts

My artifact is a squash trophy that I won this summer. I didn’t win 1st place, but I had my best performances in this tournament, where I beat 2 people who were significantly favored to win the match. It’s important to me because it was physical evidence of all the training and hard work that I put in for the months and even year before the tournament. I started playing in high school while all my opponents started in elementary and middle school, so they were always more experienced and talented than me. For the last year I’ve put in countless hours improving my game, and the results from this tournament were proof of that. The trophy serves as motivation for the future, because I realized that if you’re doing the right things and working hard, the results will show eventually.

About Me

My name is Corey Kovalovich, and I’m from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I’m majoring in aviation engineering, and am currently finishing my private pilots license. This will allow me to fly virtually wherever I want with as many passengers as I want. My career goal is to become an airline pilot for American Airlines based in Philly. Outside of class, I enjoy playing squash (I’m ranked top 100 in the country), playing baseball and spike ball for fun, flying, watching/ going to baseball games, and hanging with the boys. At OSU, I’m #1 on the squash team, and I hope to join the flight team and maybe a few intramural sports teams next semester. The first picture is of me at London Heathrow on my way to India to visit my family freshman year of high school (on this trip I realized I wanted to pursue flying), and the second is me this year going to India again. I also have a Shiba Inu named Sheeba. I’m excited to spend my next 4 years here at OSU

Top 5 Strengths

1. Kindness- I would have been surprised if this wasn’t my number 1, because I think the majority of people would agree kindness is my top strength. I feel like I’m constantly looking to make other people’s days better and looking for ways to help others.

2. Love of learning- I enjoy mastering and learning new subjects for the most part. I don’t shy away from the unknown.

3. appreciation of beauty- I enjoy taking in the beauty of the environment around me, and for the most part, try to find beauty in unappealing situations.

4. Forgiveness- I’m pretty forgiving, just because I make a lot of mistakes, and expect other people to forgive me when I offend them.

5. prudence- for the most part, I feel like I put a lot of thought into things before I act. I do make mistakes a lot, but I try to reflect and learn from the past so I can prevent them in the future.
