Dental Hygiene Online Program

Dental Hygiene Online Program

Dental Hygiene is a two year program that focuses on oral health. I recently just applied to the major, and will here back in March if I get into the program. If I do get in, next year I will have class Monday through Friday, 7:30-5:00, and occasionally Saturday for clinics. I have only looked into doing this program online; however, there are options to take some classes online for dental hygiene. I want to learn more about these programs and how they could maybe become a part of my schedule in the future. I will use my knowledge from this course to see how I can be successful in this online program. Below is just some information on the topic!

  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tFPQBnmBjU
    1. This is a YouTube video of a graduate who did an online degree program. Although it does not specifically talk about the dental hygiene program I am studying, it gives viewers an idea of how they would go about an online bachelors degree (such as dental hygiene). She does a good job of explaining the advantages of online learning, and helps you envision yourself in this type of program.
      1. Strengths:
        1. She is credible because she has done this experience already, and is just giving her opinions.
      2. Weakesses:
        1. Her opinons could be bias, and may not apply to everyones experiences
        2. Doesn’t specifically talk about the dental hygiene program, but gives general information about online programs.
  2. http://www.oit.edu/online/degrees/dental-hygiene
    1. This source is a Universities website that gives information about their online Dental Hygiene Bachelor’s degree program. It is important to be familiar with the programs associated with different schools to see if you 1. fit the requirements, 2. would even be interested in doing an online setting class, and 3. to see your different options for that particular university.
      1. Strengths:
        1. Credible because of the university
        2. Discusses benefits for taking this class online.
      2. Weaknesses:
        1. Only discusses this universities programs, no other schools.
  3. http://www.rdhmag.com/articles/print/volume-30/issue-5/features/online-continuing.html
    1. This source is an article by a continuing education presenter. The author talks about her experiences with a mixture of some online classes and some in person classes. She discusses the benefits of taking their classes online, and how it can be just as effective as taking the classes in person.
      1. Strengths:
        1. The author is credible because she is an expert in this field.
        2. The author has first hand experience with both online and in person classes in this field.
        3. The article explains the effectiveness of the online environment compared to in person classes.
        4. Has a list of pros and cons of online continuing education.
      2. Weaknesses:
        1. This isn’t necessarily talking about the actual dental hygiene program online, but more so continuing education for dental hygiene.
  4. http://www.dent.umich.edu/about-school/department/pom/dental-hygiene/dental-hygiene-masters-degree-online
    1. This website is from the University of Michigan, talking about their online Dental Hygiene program. For my research, I think it is important to have at least two sources from a university, to discuss the different opportunities each one has to offer.
      1. Strengths:
        1. It is credible because it is a universities website.
        2. Discusses benefits of their program
      2. Weaknesses:
        1. Limited to only the University of Michigan’s dental hygiene program.
  5. http://www.guidetoonlineschools.com/degrees/dental-hygiene
    1. This source discusses pros and cons of online education. This is important for my research because I want to be able to see what benefits a person can gain from obtaining a bachelors degree in dental hygiene online.
      1. Strengths:
        1. Credible because of the author
        2. Lists benefits and concerns about online learning
        3. Doesn’t give a biased opinion (at the end states it is ultimately up to the individual to decide which program is best for themselves).
      2. Weaknesses:
        1. Not specific to dental hygiene, discusses online programs as a whole.
