Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Career

One of the most interesting experiences thus far this past year has been my job as a Page for the Ohio House of Representatives. Here, I have had to not only accomplish defined tasks in a timely manner, but I also have had to utilize strong communications skills and professionalism around officials near the top of their field.

Artifacts

My artifact is my State House badge that allows me entrance into the Capitol Building and the Riffe Center. I have chosen this as my artifact because it represents the power of engagement and taking advantage of all the opportunities on and off campus. One of my main goals for the first semester especially was to engage as much as possible with the fantastic events that Ohio State has available for its students. I went to numerous events featuring President Bill Clinton, Cardinal Health CEO George Barrett, marriage equality champion Jim Obergefell, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, presidential candidate Donald Trump, and State Diplomat in Residence Michelle Jones. This engagement allowed me to see how many different perspectives and opportunities were actually out there. It made me more aware of just how big this world is around us. Seeing all these successful people each take a different path to the top of their respective fields inspired me to go forward taking my own personal path as well.

Not only did I gain in confidence, awareness, and diversity, but I gained tangibly as well. Through all this engagement, I learned about the Page Program, which I believe compliments my educational and career goals nicely. It has inspired me to do more within Ohio State and throughout the city of Columbus and beyond. My badge demonstrates that taking full advantage of the opportunities around me does come to fruition.

About Me

I am a first-year student at The Ohio State University. I am also a member of the Business Scholars, and I am dual majoring in Finance and World Politics with a possible Spanish minor. I am a life-long Buckeye fan from the small town of Plain City, Ohio, about twenty miles from campus. Thus far this year, I have been active members in First Year Leadership Initiative, No Labels, and The Alexander Hamilton Society. I am also a Page at the Ohio House of Representatives, and I participate in campaign trips for the upcoming elections in my spare time.

My goal at Ohio State remains to further explore the depths of who I am and what drives me to purposeful action. I desire to take advantage of many of the opportunities here including research, internships, study abroad, and the many clubs on campus. My time at OSU thus far has been transforming in so many ways from individual growth to qualitative knowledge to real world career opportunities. I’m excited to see what the proceeding semesters bring.

After Ohio State, I aspire to a career in the financial sector or in the political world.
