Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

For my Explore Columbus assignment, I chose to pick my activities by theme. The first theme that I chose was ice cream and desserts. The reason I decided on ice cream and desserts was that I get a lot of enjoyment out of eating both of those items. So it was the natural choice to be able to eat dessert and complete an assignment at the same time. I’m looking forward to experiencing different shops in and around the  Columbus area and hope to gain a deeper appreciation for this area and all that it has to offer for dessert.

For my final two destinations, I choose another food option at Stack City Burger and then changed it up by visiting the Olentangy River Trail to experience some nature. My favorite experience was going to Jenni’s ice cream in the Short North. They had tons of different ice cream flavors and they all looked delicious. It is definitely a required stop when in Columbus. My experiences have taught me that Columbus has a lot more to offer than I initially thought and they are very close too. I want to keep exploring the many restaurants that Columbus has. I would recommend all of the places that I went to to a friend.

#1. Jenni’s Ice Cream

After hopping on a COTA bus to take a short ride down to the Short North area of Columbus, our group first stopped by Stack City to enjoy some delicious burgers. After a short deliberation, we decided to take a short walk through the rain to get some dessert at Jenni’s Ice Cream. I chose to go with a single scoop of salty caramel ice cream and I did not regret my choice at all. The ice cream was delicious and exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend this fine establishment to any one of my closest friends.

#2. Stack City Burger

The second placed we visited was Stack City Burger, which is a restaurant that specializes in burgers. It is located in the Short North. After looking over the menu, I decided to try something that I had never had before, an egg on a burger. At first I was skeptical, but I decided to try it and I was not disappointed. The egg definitely enhanced the flavor of the burger. I would highly recommend the burger with and egg on it to anyone. The others I went with also said that their burgers were fantastic, so I would also recommend the restaurant to my friends.

#3. Olentangy River Trail

Whether it be to escape the everyday stresses of college life, or simply to get some fresh air. The Olentangy River Trail is a great place to go to. I went there on a Tuesday walk along the scenic river as a nice change of pace from the concrete walls of Drackett Tower. The pathway parallels the river for miles, making it a great place to run or walk along. After my great experience, I would highly recommend this destination in Columbus to anyone. It is a very short walk from campus.

#4. Melt

Just a quick bus ride away, Melt is located in the Short North Area of Columbus. They offer a wide variety of gourmet grilled sandwiches, along with other options such as soups or salads. I thoroughly enjoyed my grilled cheese sandwich. Both the food and ambiance were spectacular during my lunch journey there. I am still blown away by the amount of quality restaurants that Columbus has to offer, especially since most are only a short bus ride or walk away. I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone and I hope to go again sometime.

Artifacts

In high school, I participated in a fighting robot competition where I was able to design and build a robot. The experience made it clear to me that I liked to engineer things since I enjoyed the experience. It was a big factor in my decision to chose my mechanical engineering major.

Going to a Ohio State football game is symbolic of part of who I am, a Buckeye. The whole experience of being a student at The Ohio State University has been extremely enjoyable and I wouldn’t want to change anything about it.

About Me

Hello, my name in Ben Konves. I am originally from Centerville, OH, which is about twenty minutes south of Dayton, OH. I went to Centerville High School. Two of my favorite activities in high school were working with robotics and volunteering. During my junior and senior year, I worked to design and build a robot to compete in the Xtreme robots competition. The goal of the competition was to build a fighting robot to compete with in a sudden death tournament. I had a great experience and it sparked my interest in the field of mechanical engineering. One of my other passions was giving back to the local community through volunteering. My favorite place to volunteer at was the Dayton House of Bread, where I helped to prepare free meals for those in the community that struggle with malnourishment and hunger. Volunteering at the Dayton House of Bread was a great experience and it allowed me to see the impact of my service firsthand. Now in college, I am a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars. One of the main reasons that I chose to participate in HES was the fact that it allowed me to utilize engineering skills to give back to the community.

1. Analytical- A person who is analytical is described as someone who routinely looks for reasons and causes. I identify with this statement because I will always try to think about all of the factors that may affect a situation.

2. Harmony- A person with harmony as a trait usually look for consensus. This describes me because I believe that nothing is gained from heated debates and that we are better off when we find common ground.

3. Intellection- Having the intellection trait is described as being introspective and appreciating intellectual discussions. This is very similar to me in that I enjoy having time for myself to sit and think.

4. Individualization- People who have the trait of individualization are described as seeing the different qualities of every person. I relate to this because I often notice how each person is unique in a certain way from everyone else.

5. Deliberative- People who are deliberative take serious care when making decisions or choices. I also find myself carefully considering all outcomes and possible consequences before I make a big decision.
