The Problem

Our group has been challenged with the objective of creating an Advanced Energy Vehicle (AEV) for the Smart City Columbus initiative.  The task is to create a vehicle that will transport passengers from Linden to Easton and Polaris in a safe and efficient manner. Smart City Columbus is the first potential buyer. Other potential buyers may include other transportation companies and other cities looking for safe, efficient advanced energy vehicles.  The team will research, design, and create the AEV that will complete this task. Visit the Columbus: A Smart City page to learn more about the objective of this project.

Overview

The process of completing the task began with *Preliminary Research and Development. During this time, the team learned how to operate certain components of the AEV that would soon be used in the designs. These components include but are not limited to: the Arduino nano board, motors, reflective sensors, etc. The engineering design process was also started during this time. Each team member drafted an initial design to be discussed amongst one another. This group of designs was put through the Concept Screening and Scoring process to appropriately compare them using a weighted system of grading. Based on the results of the scoring, two designs would move forward to be incorporated into future models.

The team would then move on to *Advanced Research ad Development, where two concentrated areas would be studied to further develop the design of the AEV. The two areas chosen were Motor Configuration and Coasting v. Power Braking. Experiments were conducted regarding both of topics and their data was analyzed to make educated conclusions. The knowledge gained through this process was applied to the model of the vehicle. The modifications can be found in the Evolution of Design.

Finally, the AEV completed several *Performance Tests. These tests prepared the team for the final task by incrementally building off of one another until the AEV completed the entire task. The details found for the final test including the energy used and total cost can be found under Performance Test Three.
