Artifact 3

My 3rd artifact is the computer program Matlab. Matlab has been very significant to me this year and signifies me achieving my goals. One of my goals I set for myself for my college career was to get involved with research. This year I started working as a research assistant in the Ecohydrology and Forest Meteorology lab. I use a program called Matlab to process data from various wetlands in Ohio. The data traces many different variables, such as carbon fluxes, which are important in evaluating how disturbances affect ecosystems. I really enjoy coding and feel that I have grown a lot academically and as a person through this experience. I hope to continue working in this lab, and at some point potentially devise a project of my own. I am very excited for what the future will bring and to get more involved in this work!

G.O.A.L.S Statements

Global Awareness

My coursework has helped me gain a global perspective. Last year I took music cultures of the world, and that helped me understand other cultures on a deeper level. We explored many types of music from different areas which I had never heard, and it really opened up my eyes to the great diversity and beauty that our world has to offer. I plan to continue to take classes like this one, because I love how it allowed me to dive into new cultures and become more aware of the world around me.

Original Inquiry

This year I started working as a research assistant for Professor Gil Bohrer in the College of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering. I solve a variety of programs using Matlab, a computer coding software. The lab gathers vast amounts of environmental data, processes it, and models it. This is important for analyzing how our environment changes over time. I am very pleased with this position and plan to continue with research for the rest of my time at Ohio State.

Academic Enrichment

I am studying chemical engineering, and this relates to my goal of working  within the environmental or pharmaceutical field. I chose this path because I love science and math, and helping others. Whichever route I choose, I am excited to be helping others through the application of science and math. I find chemistry extremely interesting and cannot wait to begin my major-specific classes.

Leadership Development

I am involved in Phi Sigma Rho, AIChE, and SWE. My involvements contribute to my development as a leader because I regularly volunteer with these organizations. I am also on the mentorship committee within AIChE, in which I collaborate with a group to plan various mentorship events. Additionally, my involvement in research has led to personal, professional, and intellectual development. I feel like I have grown more confident as a person and in my abilities as an engineer through this opportunity. I also feel that I have developed professionally, gaining marketable skills and research experience. It also has aided in my intellectual development by challenging me and forcing me to think deeply and critically.

Service Engagement

My membership in Phi Sigma Rho and SWE have helped me become more involved in my community and volunteer. Additionally, my involvement in Mount Leadership Society Scholars has allowed me to volunteer and further educate myself on our community. It also has aided my understanding of many social issues. We have discussions about a diverse array of social justice issues, which has really helped me grow as a person and further educate myself.

Artifact 2

The item I chose to be my second artifact is my Chem 1210 lab manual. The reason I chose this is because I just started my first college chemistry course and I am very excited about it. Chemistry is my favorite science, so I am greatly looking forward to starting lab work. Additionally, I hope to get involved in lab research soon. Since taking AP Chemistry in high school, I have been extremely interested in chemistry and I see this class as the next step in reaching my academic goals.

Artifact 1

My first e-Portfolio artifact is my reusable water bottle. This water bottle is representative of my aspiration to become an environmental engineer. Reusable water bottles are very beneficial to the environment- instead of throwing away or recycling a plastic water bottle every time you drink water, you use the same water bottle. This eliminates a great amount of waste- if you drink the recommended amount of water each day (4, 16 oz plastic water bottles), you would be saving 1,460 plastic water bottles a year. When I learn new information like this, it prompts me to take action and change my habits to be more environmentally friendly. Prior to learning the effects of single use plastics on the environment, I used plastic water bottles. My reusable water bottle is representative of the new information that I learned, my dedication to reducing my impact on the environment, and my goal of becoming an environmental engineer.

About Me

Hi! My name is Callie Kleinke and I am a first-year environmental engineering student at the Ohio State University! I grew up in Lake Zurich, Illinois, where I was a very driven and involved student; I was the National Honor Society Vice President of Service, a member of the varsity soccer team, and a runner on the cross country team. Here at Ohio State I hope to be just as involved. I would like to conduct research, study abroad, and potentially participate in a co-op or internship. I am extremely excited to learn more about engineering!

Career

My resume is a great reflection of my experiences, skills, and goals. I have learned many things through my experiences; through high school I worked at the YMCA, which was a great introduction in the work force and helped me develop many invaluable work skills. I led many sports classes both independently and with other team members, which has made me an excellent at collaborating and working independently. My work within research has led me to think much more critically and become a confident problem-solver. These experiences have equipped me with the tools I need to achieve my future career goals.
