Year in Review

First Year:

One meaningful experience was the Toy Adaptation program and its workshops. It was refreshing to participate in an engineering activity that helped people out. Seeing that you can a make difference with engineering and make families happy was awesome.

My other meaningful experience was simply getting to live the life of a college student. Getting to experience the thrill of Ohio State football games and socializing was fun to be a part of. It was nice to get to live on my own as I have always been a very independent person. Overall I felt like my year was one of progress as I head to the future here at Ohio State!

Second Year:

One of my meaningful experiences my second year at Ohio State was being the captain of the GES flag football team. Organizing a group like that was fun along with just going out and playing football with friends. Even though it wasn’t the most serious event it was awesome to see my leadership skills be utilized as we came in second with a record of 4-1.

My greatest experience at Ohio State occurred my second year when I finally found what I want to do for my career. After taking three classes in the nuclear engineering field, I found it to be the right fit for me. Looking at the potential nuclear energy has and with the fact my hometown is known as “the Atomic City”(Piqua, OH) has led me to want to try and be a spokesperson for nuclear power. Overall, finding the career path and goals you want to achieve in the future has been an exciting experience at Ohio State.

G.O.A.L.S.

One GOAL that I have is to help improve the environment in the Columbus area. Our environment and climate especially are bad and we need to do everything to help restore it. Joining GES and using it to help volunteer for the right organizations will help me in my quest to make a difference in the environment.

My second GOAL is to take academic courses that will challenge me and push me. I want to figure out my career and find other subjects besides my major that interests me. Not only do I want to challenge myself academically in the classroom but with first-hand experience by research and internships. Having hands-on experience will better prepare me for my career and the real world workplace.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

I have become active in the community by helping the organization F.L.O.W. on several occasions to help the environment. I have narrowed my focus on a career path in the nuclear energy field by taking graduate level courses.  Research and internships are positions I need to work on as I yet to have had one. First hand experience is important to employers and this upcoming year that is my primary goal. A new GOAL of mine is to get more involved in extracurricular activities and join groups related to my field.

Career

Resume

I have developed many skills so far at my time here at Ohio State. I have a basic understanding C++ programming and can use it to help in data analysis. After taking a data analysis course and engineering writing course I can now do reports on research and tests with ease. Finally, the experience with group presentations and projects has led me to become a better leader and group mate. All my past work experience, skills, activities, and academic history can be found in my resume above.

In my future career I would like to do research for nuclear power and then eventually become the spokesperson for nuclear power. I would love to work for a company or organization that protects the environment and benefits the community of the surrounding area. I want to make a difference.

Green Engineering Project Presentation

My group was given the opportunity to look at green engineering topics for our Scholars 1100 class. We examined multiple ways in which artificial photosynthesis could be utilized to make useful solar fuels and oxygen. The following techniques are what we found useful: splitting CO2 with a catalyst, reducing CO2 with a bacteria to produce a fuel, and converting biofuels by a photoelectrochemical cell. This project provided me an opportunity to work with a group of people and discuss ways in which our generation can help keep our planet clean. It was such a great experience because it opened my eyes looking at all of the ways in which people can make a difference to our environment. Our Green Engineering Project has made me even more interested in green engineering techniques and the project as a whole was a thrilling success.

Three Mile Island Unit-2

My group was tasked with providing a summary of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident for my NE5610 Reactor Safety class. We examined the main causes of the event, the results of it, the  aftermath, public opinion, and finally new precautions taken for safety. This project, along with the class itself, helped shape my professional goals. I recognize now how safe the United States makes nuclear power and how little we utilize it due to cost and public opinion. The link above will explain the accident and hopefully spark your interest like it did mine.

About Me

DSC_0572 (3)

Hello, my name is Kenton Kiser. I am a recent graduate of Piqua High School in 2015 where I was Salutatorian of my class. In high school I challenged myself with taking 11 AP classes that expanded my knowledge in all subjects. Math and science are the subjects I enjoy the most as I participated in Science Olympiad and made it to state twice with my teammates. I plan on engaging in research and interning at local companies during my time at Ohio State. After getting my bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics I want to go to graduate school either for Nuclear Engineering.  My dream job includes being a spokesperson for nuclear energy in general to help increase clean energy in the United States.
