Exploration: Education and Human Ecology

I attended the Education and Human Ecology lecture because I was interested in the Special Education major.  I want to possibly major in this college to either become a teacher or to have a teaching background.  Possible career outlooks for me include becoming a special education teacher, a grade school teacher, a speech pathologist, or an occupational therapist.  My future career will hopefully involve interacting with people on a daily basis.  I enjoyed how this college at Ohio State was presented as “The People College”.  It includes majors such as Human Sciences, Education, Human Development, Child and Youth Studies, and Special Education.  I attended this lecture expecting to only learn about the education major and was pleased to find even more majors that fit my interests.

A major in this area would prepare for a career that requires interacting with children.  I think it would be extremely valuable to know how to teach children and how they develop at each age.  It aligns with my interests because I hope to have a career in a field that interacts with children.  Although I am not sure where I would like to go with a major in education, the skills from this major would carry well into my future.

I had originally planned to enroll in FEEP for the spring semester.  This program seems like the perfect way to determine whether or not I would like to be a teacher.  However, I wanted to do this program in order to shadow a school speech pathologist and occupational therapist.  FEEP, at this point in my college career, did not fit into my schedule.  Because education is not high on my list of majors, I decided to not take FEEP next semester.  I think it is important for me to seek out education careers outside of Ohio State because I will not be taking FEEP.  I am still interested in Human Development and Child and Youth Studies.  I plan on doing more research on these two majors to see if they are something I would like to minor or major in to support another area of study.

Exploration: Pharmacy and Public Health Lecture

·

I attended the Pharmacy and Public Health lecture because I am interested in majoring in Public Health and possibly minoring in Global Public Health.  Public Health fits my strengths and interests because I am interested in the medical field and undeserved communities.  I am very passionate about working with underprivileged children and with nonprofit organizations.  The Public Health major combines my desire to interact with people, provide medical care, and make a difference on a large scale.  The Global Health minor interested me because I would be able to extend my public health background to any community around the world.

Public Health is comprised of two specialties.  These specialties are environmental public health and sociology.  I am interested in the sociology specialty.  This side of public health studies communities and works in prevention rather than treatment.  When listening to the lecture, I was most fascinated in the sociology of undeserved communities.  I would be interested in studying how the community’s health can be improved through efforts of the public health field.

Maggie Brim spoke about deciding between Public Affairs and Public Health, two majors that are still on my list.  Her description of the two majors helped me distinguish between the two majors.  From her description, I realized that Public Health would be a better fit based on my interests and strengths.  Maggie also discussed joining the Peace Corps with her degree upon graduation.  Joining the Peace Corps has always been a distant dream of mine.  I believe that either minoring in Global Public Health or majoring in Public Health would give me the background and skills that I need to make myself marketable for the Peace Corps or any global initiative.

Before attending this lecture, I did not know whether or not Public Health was a potential major or minor for me.  After attending the lecture, I am strongly considering both Public Health and Global Public Health.  There are so many study abroad opportunities, available professors, internships, and other opportunities through this major that I would like to be involved in.

I am interested in discussing this possibility with my advisor.  I would like to start taking classes under this major so that I can get some experience under my feet before declaring a major.  I would like to find out more about the career outlooks for students who graduate with a degree in Public Health.
