Year in Review
I remember it as if it were just yesterday. Me and my family piled in our rental car in matching Ohio State shirts with hangers prodding into our sides and eyes closed hoping to chase the jetlag from our flight away. I remember the day that I moved into Park Stradley hall as if it were yesterday. Thus, as I sit here writing this, I can’t fully wrap my mind around the fact that my freshman year is over.
However, the tremendous amount of growth that I have experienced throughout the year is what actually enables me to understand that my first year at Ohio State has come to an end. Since the moment my parents dropped me off, my sense of independence has been developing and growing into the strong skill that it is today. In addition to learning how to do my own laundry, I have also learned how to make important decisions on my own. Quite frequently the difficult decisions that I have had to make were centered around time management and academic choices. Therefore, I feel very well equipped going into the next school year knowing that I can make these decisions efficiently and effectively.
Time management has been an especially difficult task to learn due to the fact that I was able to connect with an incredibly strong group of girls at the very beginning of the year. Therefore, I found myself wanting to do everything that I could with them. Although I had the most fun around them, it took me a significant amount of time to realize that I didn’t have the most productive time with them. Thus, I had to realize that it was okay to take time to myself to study or complete homework and meet up with them later. This transition was extremely hard to make because I love being around people, but was essentially necessary to ensure academic success.
In addition to working extremely hard to pursue academic success, I knew that I wanted to remain active and involved in my community. However, I found it difficult to juggle my academics, service, and overall adjustment to campus my first semester. The main way that I was able to stay active in my community first semester was through the Black Student Association( BSA). BSA provided me with a welcoming environment to meet other black students while also engaging in fun activities. However, after feeling acclimated on campus, I knew that I could successfully become active in my community again second semester. Specifically, I knew that I wanted to further my passion for educational equity that I developed in high school. Thus, I applied to be a College Mentor for Kids and served as a mentor my second semester. Interested in gaining even more exposure to health care, I was also able to volunteer weekly at Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care my second semester. Becoming involved in service again after my first semester made it very clear to me that I always need to be involved in some form of service to feel fulfilled as a student.
Although I am extremely disappointed that my first year got cut short, I am also extremely grateful for the opportunity that remote learning has provided for me. It was from the comfort of my bed that I was able to attend lecture and study without distractions. However, I am still counting down the days until I can return back to campus and be reunited with my fellow Buckeyes.
G.O.A.L.S.
[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. - Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.
- Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
- Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
- Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
- Service Engagement: To fulfill my service requirements, I served as an internal escort at Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care and a mentor for College Mentor for Kids. As an internal escort at Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care, I greeted and helped direct patients to their correct destinations and even escorted some patients in wheelchairs to their final destinations. Additionally, I helped manage the registration table so that there was an appropriate flow of patients going into and leaving registration. Being able to directly interact with patients was an extremely valuable opportunity that I look forward to developing further in the nursing field. As a mentor for College Mentors for Kids, I was paired with a second grade girl from a local elementary school. My role was to interact and guide her throughout the weekly themed activity. Examples of weekly themes included neuroscience and even Ohio State Football. Through College Mentors for Kids I was able to confirm that I do indeed working with kids and want to pursue a career that enables me to do so. Additionally, I learned important skills such as patience and strong communication.
Career
Artifacts
For my artifact, I am choosing the letter that named me to the Dean’s List in the College of Nursing. I am choosing this letter as my artifact because it illustrates how hard I worked my first semester in college. I am extremely proud of the fact that I was able to make the Dean’s list while also adjusting to my college transition. Therefore, I learned that hard work and sacrifice will always pay off in the end even if we are unable to see the benefits the beginning. Additionally, the fact that I am named on the Dean’s List in the College of Nursing was a reminder of my goal: to be accepted into the Nursing program. Additionally, making the Dean’s list first semester served as motivation to make it again second semester.
Mikayla King has spent half of her life in the sunny South and the other in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Despite the very different climates and cultures, the one thing that remained consistent was her love for serving and caring for others. With her passion for taking care of others in combination with her love of AP Biology, Mikayla was immediately attracted to Nursing as a career.
Currently a pre-nursing student, Mikayla’s main goal of focus is getting accepted into Ohio State’s Nursing program at the end of her freshman year. However, in the future she aspires to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she would like to use her position to address the disparities present in the health care field. Her eagerness to address disparities in health care stems from her involvement in on the Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory Council and internship at Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center.
As both a Health and Sciences as well as Morill Scholar, Mikayla looks forward to forging a strong connection between health care and social justice. Additionally, she looks forward to using her time outside of the classroom volunteering, becoming involved in a variety of clubs, and making new friends.
This E-Portfolio will follow Mikayla on her academic and personal journey as she explores all that The Ohio State University has to offer!
