A picture of my mock trial team after our second competition of the season. So far this year we have competed at Scarlet and Grey in Columbus and the Wolverine Classic in Ann Arbor. Currently we are preparing for regionals in March!

Mock Trial at OSU won the Great American Mock Trial Tournament, one of the most competitive in the nation! I did not compete with the A team at this competition, but I was gifted with the opportunity to time-keep and observe. This entire experience was incredibly informational and I believe I learned a lot of skills that will help me progress my mock trial skills. I will be forever grateful to this program and everything that its members have taught me.

The final letter “S” stands for Service Engagement. My involvement with College Democrats allows me to become more engaged with the community at Ohio State and the Democratic Party in general. Through College Democrats I can service my community by canvasing for candidates starting at the grassroots level. This level, after all, is the most important for change. I plan to continue to push for an advancement of the party in both local and national government. In the future I hope to become more involved in servicing my community through the use of service centered clubs. I have always believed that service is the center of life and is vastly important for all and would love to be more involved in it.

The fourth letter “L” stands for Leadership Development. On campus I am primarily involved in College Democrats and Mock Trial at OSU. On the Mock Trial team I am able to foster my skills as a leader by writing crosses, directs, and speeches. Recently, I was promoted to team captain. This means that before trial I go to the captains meeting and discuss the logistics of the upcoming trial and prepare demonstratives. My involvement with the team at OSU allows me to become more comfortable in the court room and develop necessary skills needed to become a lawyer. It has also allowed me to work on my time management skills as being a competitive member of the team involves a great commitment, but I can not allow my passion for Mock Trial to distract me from school.  It also has allowed me to grow intellectually as it become a new means of thinking, learning, and writing.

My fellow teammate, Emma Traylor, and I after our first mock trial competition! At Scarlet and Grey we placed 6th, receiving an honorable mention, and tied for fourth on ballots. This tournament was an amazing learning experience and I can’t wait for more in the future!

Another great trip courtesy of PSL, this time we were able to visit the Franklin County Courthouse. Here we were able to listen to court cases as they were tried, meet with judges, and had a special meeting Prosecutor Ron O’Brien!

The third letter in G.O.A.L.S, “A” stands for academic enrichment. Currently I am double majoring in psychology and political science. In the future I plan on attending law school and hopefully becoming involved in the political process through my work in the law. I believe that having a major in psychology will equip me with a unique skill set as a criminal defense attorney. With my base knowledge I will be able to have a further understanding into why those who commit crimes behave the way they do. Psychology is also a subject I thoroughly enjoy learning about the inner workings of the mind. The same applies to my second major, political science. After practicing as a lawyer I would love to have the opportunity to represent Ohio within the government. I believe that by pursuing a major in political science I will, again, be provided with the adequate materials to make an informed run for office.

The very nature of a double major requires that I be fully committed to my studies. In order to maintain my commitment to excellence I will need to flourish in both majors. The double major requires more classes to be taken and I must fully apply myself to each. I believe that not only will both my majors prepare me for my future careers, but they will also ensure that I have proper time management skills.

The second letter “O” within the Honors and Scholars goals stands for original inquiry. This encompasses becoming more involved within the research process and understanding its ins-and-outs. The emphasis and credibility that Ohio State has in regards to research makes this goal extremely attainable. In the future I plan on getting involved in labs looking into psychological research. Specifically I am looking into becoming a research assistant in studies regarding clinical psychology. I believe that the relationship between our mental and physical health is extremely interesting, as they are so closely intertwined.
