Project Statement

I took a shape from my Shape Grammar project and created a 3D form that included an additional form attached on top and different negative spaces. I created a complicated form that appears to have a simple design building process. When looking through the center of the form you would expect to see the negative spaces and the corners of the outlining shape, but they are blocked off making the piece seem very simple. My goal was to make an interesting shape and tackle a difficult form to test my skills and push myself. I wanted to create a shape that also had multiple points of interest that was not all focused on one addition to the shape so that there was a sense of balance. I believe that it was successful, especially in creating a difficult attachment that was connected in the net to the rest of the form in a way that looks as if it is detached. I also believe I was successful in improving my craft from before when learning to make 3D forms.

Reflection

I learned how to become more accurate and precise with my craft, and how to think outside of the box to be able to come up with a special fold so that the object would be closed off. I overcame these difficult folding techniques that I had to test and learn how to make work, including fitting the pieces on a net so they would not overlap and make the form possible. I overcame the difficulty of putting the form together and attaching pieces that I could not reach by using a tool to poke inside. I also discovered different ways of showing negative space, whether it’s creating a form for negative space or taking away from a form. I found that there is something interesting about coaxing the viewer to look at something and having what is seen not be what was expected.
