Year in Review

My Personal and Professional Growth Throughout the Year

Coming in to the year, I did not have much experience working together with others in small teams, and organizing my time. I was much more used to High School where your time is more structured, and you have less freedom.  Personally I have grown by working with a project team to complete lab reports, and software projects.  I also have much more experience with managing my personal time, and maximizing my productivity during the day.

My Experiences (both good and bad) over the Course of the Year

This year was all about getting to know OSU and the resources that they offer. I found that attending my TA and Lecturers office hours was a really good resource for me to study and prepare for classes. Not to speak badly about any tutoring that OSU offers, but I felt like during office hours I got more of my questions answered then when I went in for tutoring. I also was able to participate in the hackathon, part of  HackOHI/O. I was able to gain experience working with other on game and designing apps. I also had a lot of fun!

My Expectations for the year and Expectations for the Next Year

My expectations for the year and how it was were pretty much equal. I didn’t think any of my classes were too difficult, however the amount of work that I did have to put in to them was more than I was used to. In the years ahead, I am excited to learn about new topics. I also expect that my classes will be pretty similar in difficulty to what I am used to right now.

How I have Grown from Previous Years

I am currently still a first year student, however I have already seen growth in what I have been able to accomplish this year. I have gotten much better at Math and Physics, however I have also gotten much better at not being afraid to ask questions and seek help when I am learning about a topic that I don’t understand right away. Also my classes have prepared me with being able to learn and master new information quickly.

G.O.A.L.S.

To make the most of my time at OSU, I am striving to meet different G.O.A.L.S. to enrich my college experience.

  • Global Awareness: I plan on trying to participate in a study abroad this summer, where I can gain appreciation for other cultures and gain a better understanding of the world
  • Original Inquiry: I plan on working on app development to be able to share ideas I might have with a large audience.  I also plan on participating in some type of research at OSU, possibly related to digital networking.
  • Academic Enrichment: As a Computer Engineer, I plan on gaining a better understanding of how computers and electrical systems work.  I also plan on taking some business related classes, as business is a large part of the current industry.
  • Leadership Development: I plan on becoming active in the IEEE society on campus for Engineers.
  • Service Engagement: I plan on staying active in the OSU community by participating in at least 8 hours of community service each semester.

Attached is a link to a time lapse video of a screensaver I coded in python.  I have always been interested in coding and decided to use my physics concepts such as momentum and energy combined with my programming knowledge to create a physics based screensaver for my computer.  For me I have a blast being able to actually apply concepts I am learning in school to real life projects and this was just one of the many programs I hope to create at OSU.

About Me

Hello!  My name is Eric Killian and I am a first year Electrical and Computer Engineering Student at The Ohio State University.  I am from Dublin Ohio and graduated from Coffman High school in May of 2018.  I took many AP classes and have a strong background in basic computer programming as well as Physics and Calculus fueling my interest in Engineering.  Outside of class in High School I was very involved with different activities.  I was an Eagle Scout for Troop 299 and was a section leader and first chair trumpet player in my High School’s marching and concert bands.  I pride myself on my skills with leading and working with others.  At OSU I am currently involved with the Green Engineering Scholars program and am very interested in incorporating Computers, integrated systems, and data science into ways of improving the world.  As a student, I am fueled by passion for understanding nuances of different aspects of technology and love working together with others to research and create solutions to problems.  I considers myself a diligent and prudent student who is eager to both build on my academic foundations in Engineering and stay in tune with the latest digital trends and coursework.
