Second Year

This year has been a huge transformational year both personally and academically. At the start of the academic year I threw myself into a lot of activities.  I decided to participate in the second year transformational experience program and worked to develop a project that I could complete in my junior year.  I also started volunteering at the Columbus Metropolitan Library as a Buckeye Leader at the Library.  Once of my most important commitments is serving as the Business team leader of the Formula Buckeye team.  While taking part in these extracurricular activities, I was also in the process of switching my major to Industrial and Systems Engineering which filled my schedule up with many technical courses.  Along with this major, I decided this year to minor in Architectural Studies as well as Design thinking.  I was able to complete my minor in Architectural Studies this year by Studying abroad in Italy over spring break.  I just started the Design Thinking minor this semester and between summer school and next year, this minor will be completed as well.

I am excited to continue my involvement next semester. I am also looking forward to applying to my major at the beginning of next semester in order to start taking classes that will introduce me to the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Advanced Energy Vehicle

This semester, in engineering 1182, each group of four had to design and build an Advanced Energy Vehicle that would run on a monorail track while completing a given task. We completed different labs, and reported on each throughout the semester. One of my major roles on the team was designing the base and arm of the vehicle in SolidWorks. These designs were eventually laser cut and implemented in our final design.  With this project I learned the fundamentals of SolidWorks. I learned how to design objects, assemble various parts and then create digital drawings of the assemblies (Seen below).

Northern Italy Study Abroad

Over Spring break, I traveled with a group of 15 to Northern Italy for a study abroad trip that would complete my minor in architecture.  While in Italy we traveled to Milan, Ivrea and Genoa and studied the contemporary architecture in each city. This trip was my first time going outside the country, and it proved to be extremely rewarding.

Cigarette Candy Paper Analysis

In order to fulfill my writing 2 credit for engineering, I enrolled in an art education class that taught about art criticism. Our first paper for this class was a critique of our favorite piece.  Writing this piece gave me confidence in my writing and uncovered something that I am really good at. I wrote about Cigarette Candy by Sally Mann. The photo is above and my critique can be found at the link below.

ARCH 4880: Explore Columbus

This semester I enrolled in an architecture class to fulfill my minor that focused on exploring the city of Columbus. By taking this class, I gained so much insight into what Columbus has to offer.  I was also able to study the architecture of the city and learn about how unique this city truly is.

Formula Buckeyes

Another group that I joined was Formula Buckeyes. This is a club at Ohio State that builds and races a formula-1 style racecar.  I went to my first meeting at the Center for Automotive Research and ended up becoming the Business Team Leader in the same day.  This experience is allowing me to meet new people as well as giving me a realistic connection to my future career as an Engineer. I am looking forward to the Business logic case presentation that I will have to create this semester and then present at competitions over the summer.

Buckeye Leaders at the Library

This semester was a huge transition for me as I worked to find myself.  I began this journey by  volunteering at the library for three hours every Tuesday. It was really nice to be able to get off campus and be of service to the community.  I was able to interact with so many different kids while helping with their homework and doing fun activities with them every week.  I will never forget the time spent with these kids.

Millennium Goals Project_ Gender Equality

Researching for and presenting this project was a very eye opening experience. This project taught me how broken our world really is, yet I was enriched with the knowledge to improve it. My peers and I thoughtfully and intelligently conversed about gender inequality in our world (and more specifically in the Middle East). Together we researched and read different articles and UN documents. The purpose and objectives of these articles were then condensed into this presentation which we shared with our fellow classmates. Creating this project was very impactful; however sharing it with my peers gave so much more meaning to this project.

The only way to achieve these goals is to share them with the world and teach others how to achieve them. The most important part of this project was the presentation in itself. We shared our goal with our classmates and showed them how to look at the situation. We took the problem of gender inequality and revealed the single story that lies within it. With this project, I not only increased my knowledge on this issue, but I increased the knowledge of others too.
